you guys in the south must have got more dole than us northern monkeys back then, cos i couldnt even build a decent push bike on the money i got off the nash.
I refer to my earlier posting RE: there you go classic misinterpretation - DMC was a figure of speach, we weren't trying to make any sort of statement and it wasn't meant to be taken literally - of course you can't build a two grand car on the dole - you weren't meant to, but what it did imply was, it was a dirt cheap car to build - sorry if that offended in anyway, it wasn't meant to.
Plus, Run DMC were big at the time and it was a kinda play on that - the words fitted the title!
Don't take it so literally - what's your name Tim Bagerley?
Cheers,
Jon

Don't take it so literally - what's your name Tim Bagerley? I wouldnt take Tim's comments so literally either, the 'rivalry' between the two mags was almost as 'expected' as that between Blur and Oasis. Tim's a genuinely nice bloke!

I always thought DMC was ruined by the paint...but I should imagine that when someone says 'I'll give you a free/cheap paintjob if you put it in the magazine' then you're not going to say no are you! I've always assumed that was what happened anyway.
Where is Baggaley now anyway? - every time I hear his name I smile thinking about his anti-radial rants and Chris Froggat's fantastic hospital bed caricature! ;D

I suppose adding it up Darrens Quorsa is a Retro-rides modern DMC, or it will be... In a mag though like ya say a paint job for cheap makes interesting reading and finishes it off, plus if your best mate was nightmares, or racer 86 it would be possible-ish, on a budget it means i guess. Any pics of this DMC? remember the term but cant remember it at the mo.

Do you mean Tony or Tim?
I wasn't having a pop at Tony personally but that was the sort of stuff we had to put up with on the mag at the time, I'd have thought 12-ish years later most people would have got it by now. I'm sure he is a nice bloke and my Bagerley comment wasn't meant to be taken that literally either. That's the trouble with the written word you see, no chance of seeing me smiling whilst I'm writing it!!
Tim - don't forget I knew him very well, yes there was friendly rivalry but it went a touch more than that at times.
Rather tragically Tim was involved in a bike accident, which he recovered from Then err, he got back on his bike and did it again - this time he lost an arm.
I've not heard from him since but he is still about.
And yep, I always hated the paint - not at first but when it was done I couldn't see me driving it either! Wish we'd left it red but there was another red one about at the time only twin cam Fiat powered and in the Waltham Cross (?) area. You're right, when you get a 'sponsored' paint job, you don't turn it down. In hindsight though.....
If I'd been doing the car now, it would have been red with an XE I reckon but there you go I have too many cars as it is - which reminds me, I'm supposed to be down the farm workin'on me wagon!
Lastly, if I've upset anyone, I'm sorry I didn't mean it and I'll buy you a pint! That of course is an open invitation for the whole site to tell me I'm a Harry Munt...........
I'll be handing out vouchers!
Cheers,
Jon

Some may have seen him as the one-armed zombie who wanders into the lounge in Shaun of the Dead, amongst other roles.

v8wagon - no offence taken by me. although it was meant with tongue fimly in cheek, I'm sure you are well sick of comments like that so i shall withdraw it. you see, what got my goat about it was the fact that a few years before i had done a clean, well low chevette 4 door on wide manta steels for under 500 sheets. unforunately no pics of it exist. and you binned that lovely tartan interior for some mg metro? items. ;D

Bottle Rocket and DMC where from my favourite motoring years, the cars I wanted to modify where cheap and available. Early Saabs, the S110Rs, 2CV's, Avengers in fact anything 60s, 70s and early 80s that wasn't too fashionable was ripe for a slamming and rims for no more than a couple of hundred sheets. Okay, so they're mostly still around today, it's just you could do it without a conscience back then... Plus nothing from the last ten years really gets me going like they did.
Got my old copies of SM that I dig through once in a while, I find it kind of fitting that three of the old SM staff have posted in this thread though. Says a lot for RR and it's content.
Street Machine was a state of mind that in the end, not a lot of people wanted to buy into.

I had Street Machine from issue 1, the lure of the project Rover P5b BLC 455H being too much to handle. I stopped buying in the Colin Burnham/Nigel Grimshaw days, the kinda things they were raving about didn't float my boat. Had a dig through my mags and this is the only one I have left. Enjoy. November 1985. 95p! Steve Kirks take on Triumphs... Bruntingthorpe Street Rod Nationals August bank holiday. The controversial Letters or 'Willie Bishop' page back issues! the god that is Andy Saunders... Nice pair of Y fronts..... Plastic fantastic Fibresports... Win a state of the art computer game... Back page... Wish I still had my older ones and Hot Rod & Custom UK, Hot Car etc. Sorry about picture quality, they were taken in my hallway at 2.10am.

I got 'em too... ;D Thanks for multiple scannage guys. Now those that missed out can see what all the fuss was about... I think people cared less then about how it was modified, they just modified whatever, however and got on with it. Maybe people worry too much these days about conforming to a set of rules or particular style, I know most were similar in execution back then... Oh I don't know. Time waits for no man, or car for that matter.
