I thought i'd better start a thread on here of my new car. as anyone who's read my threads before know, i'm a lot better at working on my cars rather then writing about them. but here we go, hopefully be of interest to a few on here. so, being as I have my turbo laurel which I need to lay up while I fix it a bit, and only have my 40yr old range rover to comute to work in, I figured I needed another car to smoke about in. had to be something comfy, retro and fairly good on juice too. so when I saw a big 2.8 petrol auto barge was available I had to go have a look ;D it's a model i've fancied for a while now, and I knew this one had had money spent on it, sorting out the sills and sourcing some good chrome bumpers etc. so despite the way it looks I knew it was something I had to have. in spite of it being over budget and having no tax or mot... trailered it home and introduced it to it's stablemate

now, the plan was to get it mot'd and smoke it about till I get the laurel back on the road. first thing I wanted to do was give it a good check over, ended up changing out some of the parts used to lower it as I wasn't totally impressed with the way it'd been done, so for now it's sitting a bit higher till I get around to re doing it. also replaced the door mirrors as I hate not having them, and had to swap out the sword gear shifter as the lock had been by passed. shame cus it did look kinda cool, it may be going back on once i'd unlowered it, I could get it on my works ramp, so got it on there to check out the underside. looks very good so gave it a good clean up and coat of chassis black, also wax oiled the box sections. and removed a load of trim parts to gain access to any other concealed parts. also gave em a good clean while they were out. and got some wax stuff in the scuttle areas to. I bare metaled the sills as although these had been replaced very nicely they already had surface rust coming through, think this was due to poor paint coverage and being only in primer for a while. before bare metaled and treated with metal restorer solution to get off any remaining rust. then given a couple of coats of primer and couple of coats of 2k top coat to seal it. just a temporary colour till I make my mind up what colour it's going. also had to replace most of the exhaust as this was full of holes and pretty noisy. replace the front box with one from my stock of exhaust bits, got a new center section and replaced the rear box with another of my stock so once i'd done all this I stuck it in for an mot to see how it'd get on...

and got a fail. not to bad thou. failed on. front lower ball joint which was pretty bad most of the steering link rubbers were split, now a fail. and excessive emissions. so, rather then just fix it i decided the best thing to do is get on with the planned engine swap ;D i'd always planed on changing out the auto box for a 5 speed manual and replacing the straight six petrol with a straight six diesel... the engine is an LD28, which is basically just a L28 but diesel. looks the same except for the glow plugs and injectors instead of spark plugs. the engine mounting holes on the block look the same but because of the injection pump i can't use the standard mounts, so i've modified the mounts that were on the diesel lump. (this engine came from a converted land rover) Cedric mount on the left, converted mount on the right i've also removed and converted the pedal box to take a clutch pedal and normal sized brake pedal and i've had to convert the rod linkage throttle to a cable thats it so far. i'm hopefully gonna get some good progress this weekend

Hey! Nice to see this car getting some loving. Didn't you buy the ex J-S Datsun estate as well? haha yeh. the laurel has been through his hands too. unsurprising really cus we're both in hampshire and these old datsuns are pretty rare. the red estate and laurel have both been Datman's too. infact i've had six ex Datman cars ;D

got some progress over the weekend. bolted in the new pedal box with clutch master and the throttle assembly, looks like thats gonna work nicely. i'm going to raise the height of the steering column by 10mm as the wheel seams to sit quite low. before I can fit the manual box I had to remove a plate where the shifter comes throu the floor, looks like datsun just added this bit on the auto's. I had to drill out a few spot welds and give it a tap with the hammer. so that the car ready. moved onto the engine and box. engine came out of a converted land rover so had an adapter plate bolted onto it, whoever did the conversion didn't want the adapter to ever come off so had welded the bolts. had to cut thou the weld to get it off once that lot was off I refitted the sh t plate and flywheel, along with new clutch and spigot bearing. bolted up the manual box and it's looking like it's ready for fitting also been working out the wiring as i've gotta have a glow plug relay and do away with the auto's inhibiter switch. and as this engine has a later type alternator i'm able to do away with the separate voltage regulator. from what i've worked out all this should be fairly straight forward. got day off monday so going to get it all bolted in if all goes well.

Nice one!!! I'm sure i've seen a couple of factory diesel ones of these on Leboncoin. the factory diesel 330's (not sold in uk) came with either a sd20 or sd22 four cylinder diesel. this engine came out in the later 430 diesel cedrics, again non uk.

i approve of this, love the idea of anything diesel that shouldnt be at the mo. arent those engines horrendous on fuel though? like about 25-30mpg? we had one in a forklift and it certianly ate a lot quite quickly, i know its a different type of use though.

arent those engines horrendous on fuel though? like about 25-30mpg? i've got the same engine in my range rover, preminent 4wd, and i'm getting around 28mpg in that. and thats worked out in normal use, driving to and from work, which is mostly back roads and hills. i hoping this should get me mid to high 30's. we'll see.

so. day off work to try and get on with this. lets see if this fits cool all bolted up nice, had to adjust the sump a little but not to bad. exhaust fitted straight on, gearbox crossmember and propshaft both bolted up with no dramas. even the speedo cable went straight on. got the wiring worked out, nice and simple. so thought i'd better get it running. but no joy. the injection pump has sprung a leak. very hard to figure out what and where so i've pulled it off and will fit the injection pump off of my spares engine that i have had running. the offending piece

i blew the bulb on my flood light so couldn't get much more done. looking forward to summer evenings!
