I am a keen mountain biker, and last sunday a memory popped into my head about a car in a forest I remember seeing over ten years ago on a disused Mountain bike trail. So Me and a mate decided to see if it was there, (bear in mind back then I did not know wht car it was). Well the old downhill path was long gone but we managed to get through it all to be presented by this. Now it looks as though the car was driven or rolled here well beofre I was even born (25 years), But only the chassis, also from the damage to the rear leaf springs and prop, it was in a smash. Remains of the front wheels are there buried and even the front suspension and rear suspension dampers are there. Also rusted remains of the front and rear bumper which may give a clue to what it is. The rocker cover has been removed long ago though but everything else is still there, however the bellhousing is smashed, when we got there my mate also tripped over the exhaust which promptly fell to peices lol. Now where it lies there ios a small field so it could of been a farmers vehicle. So can anyone tell me what it is, ahh i almost forgot, what ever it was it had rear disc breaks so it must of been some pricey motor, I have asked a mate of mine who is also into biking and has been going up there for longer than I have and he said its been there for over 20 years! I can take more pics if needed, also to add the floor around it is scattered with bits all in the correct place lol.

That looks jolly interesting. The gearbox even looks reasonably 'modern' i.e. 1970's. Discs on the rear too ond overhead valves! I reckon a Fiat or fiat-derived.
The condition of the bodywork would support this theory.

Now thats what I was thinking but it was the rear breaks that threw me, and the lack of knowledge of Fiat or any italian car for that matter.

can you tell if it had a monocoque body or a separate chassis?

Humm I reckon a seperate chassis as next to the engine running down one side was a curved box section which was soooo past its best, it was still fixed to the engine mount i think.
No problem I shall take some Hi Res shots of most of it tonight.

That'll be why then, don't head that way much, normally stay further North, will have to ride over & have a look though! Looks pretty big going on the size of the 'box & start motor though?

Got any pics of the outer face of the wheels? The gearbox looks more than a little familiar - GM of some description..? It's gonna need a little welding! Dale

Great find! Theres another to be found just like that in Hemlock stone woods if you know it, never did find out exactly what it is/was, but legend has it, it was launched off the cliff that it lies at the bottom of in the late 70's/eaerly 80's. That one looks a little exotic with its rear disk this and alloy that, hope it gets formerly identified!

It must be some early 80s custom (as in sect type custom), as there's the squashed and burnt remains of a two-door Mk2 Escort in my local riding woods, been there at least fifteen years (for sale - 2K).
I reckon we should launch our own piece of tat into some random spot for future generations to quiz over. I'd offer one of my Volvos, but the fugga would no doubt just fire up and drive itself off after two decades of neglect. Side lights blazing in defiance...
