So here is the burning question. Too theme or not to theme. Some car clubs at the NEC show decorate their stands to fit a "theme" Eg. Dress the cars up as characters from a film or TV programme and everyone on the stand dresses up as well. Involves lots of card board and sticky back plastic. Other clubs just put their cars on the stand and have no theme. Which is best. Vote now.

Not themed. Grow up, you are NOT eight years old.

I prefer the second option myself. The argument for the first option seems to be that it entertains family's at the show.

it depends how far you take 'themed'
goodwood revival is themed, and its one of the best shows around year on year

Yeah, but that's themed in a good way.
Not a few bits of strategically placed straw & bunting and cardboard cut-outs of old-style petrol pumps, which lets face it is always going to look a bit wierd placed slap in the middle of the NEC....

Hmm, well I think it depends what the theme is. If it's a car related theme, eg barn find / old garage set up / race car on track etc then it can work pretty well. Pimp my Riley worked well too but I suppose that wasn't really a theme, more a one off build it on the day "attraction"
Non car related themes, eg car bursting out of a birthday cake to celebrate an anniversary, cars with big furry ears on etc are a bit naff and often don't let you get up close and appreciate the car.
But if you do just "put" cars on a stand then I think it is still important to place them well and possibly have sign boards explaining the models shown, restoration stories, interesting history etc. as it gives a visitor something to actually do rather than just walk by and go "Look! Some more shiny cars."

Follow your dreams or you might as well be a vegetable.

Pimp My Riley was brill, if you can be creative with the theme rather than too cheesy and enjoy the day then why not. so i'm voting, yeah if you fancy it.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Themed themed themed.
Otherwise it can so easily become cars lined up like sardines in a can, locked with owners nowhere to be seen.

themed but with thought.
The 2CV boys do a great french garage scene every year (mind you a change would be as good as rest now boys!)
Themed cars as in telling a story etc is educational and interesting. Seem to remember the jag boys doing a great cops and robbers one a few years back.
Shows like the NEC are great as they pull in thousands of non hard core fans that wouldn't dream of attending a hard core scene event.
Kiddies that enjoy the show are more likely to become classic lovers in the future. It's not just "about the cars" it's about the fun and the love of classics.

Our theme this year is "keeping the Imp alive" which is the clubs slogan/ motto or what ever you want to call it.
We have one Imp being a doctor, one Imp being a nurse and another in a giant hospital bed. We will all be wearing white coats.
Discuss.

done right,it can really pull in the crowds.if you line them up like sardines it can be really off putting to joe public.at tatton this year we had less cars but more sensibly arranged and had more interest, and people actually coming on the stand.some ideas like the full size matchbox car were great as was the grown ups scalextric,i'm not sure about dressing up though.

Judging by yesterday, Imp and Skud owners are a very committed crazy bunch, nothing is Impossible in their book. Sounds very interesting. be sure to get some pictures!

Sounds very interesting. be sure to get some pictures! we've got to be,to get over the publics predjudice against our cars,we've even had dads dragging sprogs off the stand saying 'why would you want to look at that sh1t?' it don't do much for moral if they were looking at a really nice car either.so we get dad interested and then they soften up and see that we have genuine classic cars.every body wants to see rollers ,mercs and porsches, they have not problem enticing people onto the stand, sometimes we do and have to compensate.

Well it all comes down to the show and crowd. I can't say I'd want to go to a show where the cars take second place to gimmicks like themeing. If the cars are good enough to show that should be all that's needed. But a lot of people like that sort of thing and can bring clubs together.

I wish your club every success in what ever idea you try. Reason for my best wishes is because last years NEC Classic Car show I thought was an absolute fiasco! ...not blaming the people as such, far from it everyone I spoke to was most friendly. It was just the fact that the media claimed it was 'The' Classic Car event of the year and yet I feel there is more fun at local outdoor car shows. Also some club stands confused me considering it was a 'Classic Car' show ...e.g 'The Ford PUMA Club', now I have nothing against Ford Pumas, they are nice sporty looking cars but with the oldest version being made only as recently as 1997 how can it be at a 'Classic' Show. Next there was the 'Porsche Club GB' ...with 5 NEW models on the stand or the Range Rover Club, again I saw 3 NEW Models! ? ? As for the so called Auto Jumble - Sunday Market, etc. sprang to mind I know it is easy to pick fault when people try but considering what they charge to go in (£15) I would expect more. P.S Your Green meanie looked superb last year at the show.

P.S Your Green meanie looked superb last year at the show. It is a problem I agree. For example Peugeot pay for our (CPUK) stand and this year we had quite some pressure for us to put a new 207 on the stand as a return. The show organisers frown on this since Jaguar and other manufacturers pay loads to have their own stands on which they can show whatever they want, so this type of thing is advertising via the back door. Anyway, no new pugs on our stand this year, but we do have Richard Burns's old 205 Gti rally car if anyone fancies a respectful look. Personally I would ban any car within 10 years of end of production unless it's a "historic car" i.e race winner etc, and that woul dhave t be the actual car not an example of.
