I've been reading this thread for months without commenting - thought it was about time I did!
Great effort (with both cars), you never see them around nowadays, nice to see them being given the love they deserve.
As with many others I have fond childhood memories of these, a black 1800HL OOJ 18R and a series 2 oyster gold 2000HL with a brown vinyl roof BON 897V, sadly they were then followed by a Talbot Solara which sounded like a diesel way before anyone had diesel cars!
Best of luck with both of them!

Ran a DVLA check and both registrations come back as still belonging to the cars, but with OOJ last taxed in '84 and BON in '91 chances are they're no longer around. I've added them to the Wedgister I'm keeping, just for the sake of completeness. Occasionally, cars do surface after years of being off the road, like the HLS I've got which was last taxed in '97 or so. Top work following them up with a Solara though, that must have been a bit of a change.

It wasn't any old Solara either, it was an SX in metallic blue with a darker blue vinyl roof, alloy wheels (1st car we ever had with 'em!)' headlamp wipers and on the inside electric windows and a trip computer, I was a very impressed 12 year old! The reg was THA 347W, would be very surprised if it's still alive. My Dad really liked the Solara, as you say quite different to the Princesses.

I'm generally one for keeping cars standard, but am liking the look of what you just mocked up (and can't wait to see the Lotus wheels finally on). If you want, you can add another Princess to your wedgister, NTO 10W a beige 1.7L. I mentioned it and its trip to France on this thread on 24/2/13. Found a couple of pics from that holiday. Yes 6 people and all the camping gear right across France to Switzerland. Hope you don't mind me putting the pic up here taken in 1983.

I don't mind at all, I love stuff like that I can't remember if I'd checked before or not, but NTO was last on the road in '89, I can't tell from the pictures as it might just be over exposure, but if it had no vinyl roof then it's a now rare L which was the base model. Same colour scheme and year as mine too Cerb's Talbot was last taxed in '90, probably never to see the road again, they don't seem to get stashed away in garages like Princesses do and were never particularly hardy back in the day from what I recall. One day someone will give me a reg to a car and it'll still be on the road, one day.

I am being prevented from the painting by 2 things. Thing 1 is the large quantity of work I've been wading through since hatching the plan publicly. Thing 2 is the other Princess. I am not happy with Thing 2 right now.

Classic mistake, buying another project before finishing the first.

Another vote here in favour of the paint job, will look epic My sister had a Princess around 1984, it was a (now mega rare) Morris 1800, the kind with the V shaped bonnet and the oval chrome trim in the centre of the grill, cant remember the reg but it's definitely dead, her boyfriend drove it (when curse word), ran it off the road and smashed the underside over a tree stump, it had just been resprayed to and was looking stunning My sister had a few cool cars around that time, i also remember a Viva/Magnum 2300, a MK3 Mini Cooper S (just regarded as another used Mini at the time), and a nice Marina Coupe TC. When the Princess was first in production there was three badge versions, Austin Princess, Morris 1800 and Wolseley 1800/2200, after six months Wolseley and Morris were dropped and the car became just Austin Princess.

My dad had a bright red 2200HLS around 1981, YLS 998R. I'll try and find a pic to post if your interested?

I'm digging that If you haven't already, you should click on the '81 Princess in my signature, it's the spit of the one in your picture. Oh, and checking DVLA (Leyland Cars rather than Austin Morris as it's a phase one car) it disappeared in '88.

Ah that's a shame, think it was replaced around 83 with a beige Volvo 240.

Just out of interest, because I've had time to think about these things, do you think you could replace the hydragas system on the Princess with an airbag system? From what I've found out so far I couldn't just swap the spheres for bags as I'd need additional suspension components. It might be a suitable long term solution to the spheres which are eventually going to be impossible to replace unless a solution or manufacturer presents itself to solve the lack of parts supply.

I had already ruled hydraulics out, I'm told it's a harder ride than air which is not an option, I really want to keep the squidgy floatiness as much as possible. Also, don't you need more structural points to mount hydraulics than you do for air? This in itself poses an issue as I don't have the conventional suspension mounting points on the Princess with there being no springs or shocks and no separate chassis to utilise.
Certainly, it's not a DIY job, not for me.
