New to the forum and thought id introduce myself and post up a thread for my Mk3 Polo Saloon,
I mainly linger and post on www.polo3.co.uk and now again on the T4 Forum and Clubpolo.
I'm trying to build a half decent car to get into hill climb and sprint racing at prescott hill climb and other events, not a mechanic by trade (work in defence electronics) but I'm pretty good at learning new skills and trades so thought id have a go at building a race car by myself.
I own a Mk3 polo saloon and a T4 transporter 2.4 Diesel with 283K on the clock and still going! (converting the van to a camper)
The saloon started out life as a 1.3 SPI CL Polo Saloon lowered -40mm on springs and a twin upswept DTM exhaust.
and after a year of modding ended up like this.
I then ran the loon like this from July to December 2010 and decided I wanted to get into hill climb motorsport (prescott hill climb being my local)
so started to buy some proper parts for the saloon,
this is the current spec list that is ever growing! (Stage 1)
Handling (PPS = Polo Performance Services)
PPS - Subframe Wishbone Conversion
PPS - Front Coilovers With Spax Adjustable Dampers
PPS - Rear Coilovers with adjustable dampers
PPS - Uprated Gearbox mount

Fully Re-built 3F GT Engine (new bearings seals etc)

Megajolt Programmable Ignition
(The above spec list has changed now due to how long its taking to build the car and how much its costing! so will just settle for megajolt porting & polishing, engine service (seals new clutch etc)) bike carbs.

Bought a set 15" TSW's 15x6.5 et35 for cheap,
some pics of trial fitting,
things ive been working on,
removed rear beam,
removed petrol tank as I am going to buy a new one and modify it,
cut, drilled and placed the seat runners ready to be welded,
removed the metal above the bukhead,
cut a rear brace ready to be welded in,
ordered a fibre glass bonnet (single skin)
trial fitted the tsw alloys with coilovers wound down,

seat runners are tacked in place now,
main hoop and backstay plates tacked in with bolt holes drilled,
front hoop only bolted in place, door bars not tacked in yet, will do that this week, need cutting to length.
Fibreglass bonnet, little bit flimsy so going to add more material to reduce the flex,
Mk2 arch trim and sill covers, not sure if I'm going to fit them yet, Note I'm also running a Mk2 polo dash board.
and fibreglass wings!
quick test fit and I'm impressed at how close the are to standard (not fully bolted on)
and I'm going to polycarb the windows but not sure whether to delete to small front quarter windows or not?
luckily the rear saloon windows are they same size as the whole front so mocked up one side
test fitted both wings and placed bonnet on,
looking to put the ford edis and coilpack here and the megajolt ecu
VR sensor/bracket fitted and trigger wheel fitted to aux pulley,
will need to chop vr sensor brack a little to air waterpump adjustment
marked trigger wheel for TDC
and started work patching it up, (used bit of metal from the rear plate that the rear seats sat on)
The previous owner of the bike carb manifold I bought didnt know what carbs were on it when he bought the car, so I had to modify the spacing on my cbr600's
all linkages done
just need to make some fuel pipes for the 2 end carbs,
added another brace on the rear of the carbs to strengthen the spacing
quick mock up on head carbs on the block
and fitted bolts for the coil pack, edis and megajolt ECU
ive also started work on fitting a sunroof blank, I was going to use carbon fibre for this but havnt for 2 reasons, 1) I'm not sure MSA regs will allow it & 2) performance trim where I was going to get the blank from has gone into liquidation! >.<
so unfortunatly I had to butcher the little mk2 (this was a mk2 polo I bought to fix up but was too rotten for me to care! so stripped it for bits.
I also decided to smash my windscreen when trying to get the roll cage out for ease of access >.<

I also took the roof supports out of the mk2 to replace the one in the saloon that the dealer took out when fitting the sunroof

bonnet catches , decided not to use the brackets I fibre glassed to the bonnet and instead fix it down in 4 places (yet to fit the front 2)
finally finished the bonnet pins tonight!

Well the car is still being worked on, bit by bit, there is no way I'm going to be able to compete this year so 2013 will be when I start racing (thats if the world doesnt end by then) planning on getting the car on the road ASAP repainted polycarb windows, running carbs and megajolt.
So ive finished all the welds on the driver side seat runners and fitted passanger seat runners now for the Cobra seat,
and only just managed to get the rear roll bar back in (new seat runner was in the way), scuffed it a little so will need touching up in areas, also mocked up the seats, bonnet, wings, steering colum, boot, spoiler and steering wheel just to get a feel of how the cars looking

So yeah thats all ive done in the last year and a bit! I really need to pull my finger out and finish stage 1 of this project.
Stage 2 inlcudes either a 1.3 or 1.4 8v turbo LSD, dog box, berg cup arches and sills etc.
