Just because you buy a car thats universally regarded as cr*p and mod it, doesnt mean that your effort/end result is any more interesting or 'cool' than anything else. If the end result is a "cool" car, ie looks good, or handles well, goes amazingly fast - or manages a combination of these - or, if the modifications address any original shortcomings of the standard vehicle - then IMHO that is FAR cooler than building an "identikit" rally-rep Escort, "Italian Job" Mini etc etc. Superden, I'm not denouncing your views man, you'll note I have a bog-stock mk1 Escort. Universally accepted as cool etc etc, one of the many staples of the brit old car scene. I like it the same way you're going to like your mk2. Where would the magazines be if no-one ran old motors like these? What if Classic Ford said "We're bored of RWD Escorts, and we'll never feature another rally rep or Escort on RS rims"? ;D I can totally see both sides of the fence here. I'll stick to what I'm capable of... But I think the scene needs people like Slater doing new things and pushing things forward. Besides, we're all here because of our individuality.... Otherwise we'd be out polishing our HP'd Corsa / Astra etc etc!

its all cool if it makes you happy. Exactly. Which is why nobody should be looked down on just because others believe modifying cars is all about standing out and being creative/different. Especially not on here.

Your basicly saying you build cars for yourself and to hell with what anyone else thinks!, well thats fine for you but thats too easy for me. Surely the ultimate is to have the perfect car for yourself and everone else? Why on earth would I spend MY time and MY money, building/modifying a car for the benefit of someone else ? Thats absurd. Would you decorate your house because Mrs Jones down in number 12 liked it that way ? I'm guessing probably not. Just because someone isnt building a '100% one-off, once in a lifetime car' doesnt mean they arent being just as creative and different as you are, its not a lack of imagination or talent, its just personal taste. Lets face it, most of the cars we get such pleasure out of are rare enough anyway these days. So yes, buying/restoring a Mk2 Escort would be 'fine for me' ... which is what it should be about, not pleasing others or making 'a name' for yourself. If you want to be different thats great, we all do, so long as its for the right reasons its all good. Seeking recognition certainly isnt one of those reasons. I trust none of the comments made in this post are taken the wrong way, it isnt my intention to offend, its just that this forum is one of the few I regularly read that genuinely entertains and rarely judges those who contribute. Some of the comments featured in this thread come across as slightly belittling, which IMO does nothing for the community at all.

Seems we have unearthed some gremlins! Some interesting stuff come up which is good. all i wanted to know was why people are so against getting stuck into something 'curse word'. I have a real desire for a Marina van now, but they are not reknowned for being great are they? I'd be buying into rust, hassle from a long project and mechanical cursing wouldnt I, but they are ok arnt they cos they are old? surely a mongtego is the same sort of thing, just newer. Anyway i still want one you only have to see what RRers have done with theirs to see the potential. Theres loads of people who do the most undesirable cars up and they don't all want to be recognised. as i mentioned doesnt matter why you do what you do thats why we all gather here, but in doing so we see a wider picture than one marque or classic club/forums.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
