Hey all, I'm looking at getting a new car in summer, i know its along time away but I'm a student and my summer starts not far from easter...
Anyway I'm looking for somesort of turbo diesel, i want it to be a saloon aswell, something that looks like a ford orion or sierra as i love the shape to these, but obviously it has to be cheap on insurance, i will be 19 by summer. I have been looking at a 306 hdi, insurance is only £1400 for me which is bloody brilliant but the main let down is it isnt a saloon =/
Any ideas what i could get???

there were Sedan 306's, don't know if you'll find a HDi but there were plenty of 1.9 TD's.

Yep, replaced my Mk2 Golf GTI with a 405 GRDT about 10 years ago. It was great.
306 DT saloon sounds like it fits your bill though and less popular than the hatch so ought to be cheaper.

I'm currently finding Sierra TD's are VERY cheap to insure! However I am 27, you're 19 so it will be harder. I have mine on a classic policy. Economy is pretty good, but not very quick cars. Here's mine:

B3 Passat, can't go wrong, tough as old boots and as cheap as they come to run.

If you want a 306 then as said, look at the 306 saloons. They are a lot less desirable than the hatchbacks so therefore are cheaper. My experience when I was looking for a 306 before is that they are generally in better nick and looked after better than the hatches too.
Failing that either a 405 or my money would be on a Cavalier TD with the 1.7 Izuzu engine....

Back in the day I had a 306 DTurbo as my first car. Much cheaper insurance than say a 1.6 Focus (at that time anyway), and over 40mpg.

yeah they don't seem too bad!!! my 1.4 pug 106 would have cost me about 3 grand to re-insure, the 306 with more power is over half the price to insure. i really wouldnt mind a saloon one... i wish they did them in 2 door saloons... would be so nice

The above is an excellent suggestion that I hadn't thought of. I've had too Rover 420 Diesels and they were fantastic. I've also had 2 Rover 620 Petrols and they too were fantastic, so it would be a good combination putting both together. Failing a 620, have a look for a 420 Diesel Saloon. Heres my old 420 Diesel Saloon (with my 420 Diesel hatch as well!) The Saloon was the GSDi with all the toys and leather interior. Really a very nice place to be...
