Hi fella and fellaettes... the marina pickup has REALLY heavy steering... It was heavy before but wanted to use it for a while to see if it was just lack of use as it had been laid up. Now I think the problem lies in the wheels I've added. They're TR6 steels - 15" x 5.5" - and they have a really big offset so the track is much wider than stock. So... could this be just down to the wheel size and offset ?

This isn't much help but our last Felicia had really heavy steering. Much heavier than the previous one we had and both were early none PAS cars.

Have you changed the suspension set up at all?
Large offset wheels will make the steering feel heavier, I'm just not too sure how much thats all!

wheel offset, too much camber, incorrect castor, wide tyres, very grippy rubber, tyre pressures too low.
Alternatively IIRC the Marina uses a Minor style Trunion? These can sieze. They need to be greased regularly. If its balljointed a lot of these need to be greased on a regular basis too.
Damage to the rack can also cause very heavy steering. Some racks need to be shimmed as well as torqued in sequence to prevent the case deforming and rubbing on the rack causing wear and tightness.

the trunnions probbly want greasing to do it you must jack the car up so there is no weight on the suspension, its vital with a marina there done regulary other wise they will wear out very quickly

For the price I would just rip out that rack if it still causes problems after a bit of lube, and get a new one

i have a spare NOS rack...
I'll get in the air and see if the problems remain and then at least I can start to rule things out...

my moneys on the trunnions! they're always on their last legs. lube em up with some super-thick gear oil (not grease) and see if that helps.
Or, jack it up so the front wheels are off the ground and try turning the steering via the road wheels rather than the steering wheel. If you struggle to do it, the trunnions are donald ducked. be prepared for a right war dismantling them of they are seized up, you will need lots of fire and big tools!
