Looking for a new car and have seen something I fancy. It has the 75hp 1.9TD. Jugular wondering what the difference between this engine and the 90hp 1.9TD is? Also what are the engines like? Fairly good?
Car is a Mk1 Seat Toledo.
Cheers

I think (going buy passats) that the 75bhp is the AAZ TD and the 90BHP is the TDi IZ engine. The TD is simpler but a bit thirstier but I think you can tune it easier (although I thin both are good for 150BHP without lifting the head but need a VR6 clutch)

To put 'thirstier' into context though, I still get 50mpg from an AAZ engined B4 Passat They're brilliant, bombproof engines that will also run on veg quite happily. The AAZ uses a basic rotary injection pump with no ECU whatsoever. All of the TDIs are ECU controlled. I think Hardcore's IZ (is it IZ or 1Z? I've never paid enough attention) Audi 80 tdi is also fly-by-wire accelerator.

I wouldn't say the tuning is 'easier', just different - depends which way you swing.. AAZ is tuned mechanically (pump fiddlings) where as 1Z is fly-by-wire so is tuned electronically - both equally cheap & easy to do as I understand it.. Boost is turned up the same on either (I've got a 1Z, a dawes device & a variable resistor from Maplin ) Also, they loves the veg Any more details on this please dude? Edit: Simulteneposted with Ben149801968-234912.6 Editedit: It seems fairly common to advance the fuel pump timing about 3 degrees (often referred to as 'Diana Rossing' the pump (presumably by people not that good at music history)) to help it cold start on veg, but you can't do that with a 1Z (well, not mechanically anyway)

Any more details on this please dude? I don't know the difference with the older Audis, but I know a clutch from my B3 Passat wont fit the B5 Passat gearbox I've got at home, the B5 uses a much bigger input shaft. As the B3 is the right set-up to take a VR6 clutch, and the B5 is basically an Audi A4, unless the A4 and 80 boxes are quite different, then I'd guess that the VR6 clutch wont fit. I'm guessing the OEM upgrade for the inline engines will be from a V6 or 5 pot turbo Quattro. Sorry for the off-topic-ness, but yeah, what they all said; the 90bhp unit's the electronically controlled TDi, while the 75bhp one's the all mechanical TD, TDi's a bit pokier un-tuned and a bit better on juice.

The IZ in the B4 TDi's (like mine ) have the same clutch as the TD's/ B3's and need the VR6 golf clutch for over about 120 BHP (i think). I think the TDi has a taller FD than the TD as well (70 in 5th is 2500 rpm).
