Looking for some wisdom from folks who know their Toyotas.
I have a Triumph Vitesse 2L straight 6, fitted with a Toyota W58 gearbox from a Supra. I did that conversion and it involved the cut 'n shut of a Vitesse bellhousing with the Toyota one. A fairly tricky and time consuming process.
Some details here:
www.triumphowners.com/registry.cgi?sectionID=111014&vehicleID=574 (look under special interest projects towards the bottom)
I'm very happy with the result and now seriously considering repeating the trick on my 2.5 PI, but hoping to avoid the pain of doing another bellhousing the same way.
I have a number of alternatives to explore. One of these is that I've seen photographs of an alternative OEM Toyota bellhousing on a W series gearbox, with the starter position in a very similar position to the Triumph, which might allow conversion with a modified backplate. This appears to be for a vehicle fitted with the 22R engine, maybe something like an older petrol Hilux (2WD probably, though there are also 4WD variants of the W series box which I think use the same bell housings)
Can anyone suggest what the source vehicle(s) might be (UK market preferably!). If someone has one lying in their shed then I can give it home maybe.....
Could also do with the gearlever remote and matching selector knuckle from the Celica Supra ('85 ish?) version of the car as this is shorter and comes out in the right place for a Triumph. I had to make my own last time.
Cheers
Nick
