Hej My Ma has got a Triumph Herald 1200 that needs a little bit of love and she wants to make it a little different from the other trumps out there (Go non-conformist!) So, what could we do to the little blighter to make it different with out going OTT? I was thinking dropped on mini-lites and kept standard on the outside. Your thoughts please chaps

lowered, that'll sort out the damn positive camber at the back, black & flames would be cool. They also suit scallops nicely. If you scallop it go for a flaked roof too.
Slotmags, white walls and lakes pipes

I like the idea of scallops and flake roof with white walls. What can be done to make it brake a little better and go a little faster? I have read some where that GT7 (or is it 6?) engines have been slotted in nicely...

the chassis is similar to the Vitesse (which had a staright 6) and not a million miles off a GT6 or Spitfire. The 2000 and 2500 engines from Triumph saloons, as well as the 1600 & 2000 Vitesse engine and GT6 lump will go right in. You will need vitesse type engine mounts / brackets and you may need a Vitesse sump. I presume the TR6 one does too. I dare you... Problem is the rear suspension in lethal with anything more than about 30 BHP in it. Not sure if the later ones fixed this. Not sure if you can just transplat whats needed from a Vitesse, GT6, etc into the Herald rear end to cure it, because these models did not suffer so badly. An easier swap is the 1300 or 1500 Spitfire / Toledo / Dolomite lump. Use the box as well to get synchro on first gear. I've seen a couple of V8s done too... As for brakes - is it disc or drum? A mate has a 12/50 with discs and they are pretty dire anyway. I presume whatever works on a Spitfire will upgrade the Herald as well. There must be an option as back in the day there were a few V8 hot rods running round with Herald front suspension on them.

I have a soft spot for Vitesse's and Herald's. My Dad used to have a Vitesse 1600 Overdrive before the divorce and that was awesome. Had a magnificent exhaust note too ;D I wouldn't mind my Mums Herald ... would have to loose the MB though

What year 1200 is it? If it is an early one it might have a "mk 1" chassis (changeover was some time in '63) These are weaker in several areas and also prevent the fitment of the GT6 engine or even an O/D box on a four cylinder. Basically Mk 1 chassis = bad! The Mk 2 chassis was developed when they made the Vitesse and all Heralds got it from then too. It's got a completely different structure round the rear suspension and quite a few other tweeks. As AK said the running gear is all virtually identicle to Spitfires. Front suspension is the same so you can bolt on disc brakes if you've got drums (been there done that!) Suspension can be lowered and tweaked with uprated springs for the front that are available off the shelf (from eg Moss, Rimmers) and spring spacers at the back that also much improve the handling. I'd recomment some adjustable shocks too as stiffening up the rear gets it all under control. Minilites are readily available but not necessarily cheap and not that unusual in Herald / Spitfire circles. Keep an eye on Ebay for wheels as quite a few interesting ones come up. Here's the thread on our 1500 engined one.... retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=1143064885You should come along to the Herts/Beds area meet!

So far it's the same colour as yours Seth. Unsure of year, I will have to check when I see her at the weekend.
I'm going to try my hardest to come to the next meet.

Forget the minilites, go for revolutions. I had one years ago with them on and it looked good. I'll try and turf a picture out.

Minilites look nice on the right car. They have been overdone though. I don't think Revos are an instant win on every car either though.

Cheaper than ARE, Radir or any of the other trendy wheels of the moment.

I'm interested in seeing what Seth's Herald looks like with the silver steels.
I don't think the full rim size moon discs will suit it. It's not quite curvacious enough to get away with them.

Could put wires on it, and buy your mum a flat cap and false 'bicycle' moustache. And a boot rack with picnic basket on. Then again i cant talk, i used to have this. Owned it for 3 weeks and sold it to buy another minor.
