Thanks Cortinaman, I have found that everytime I think that's the last time I'll ever order panels for this car I find some more rust!
as for the top mounts they aren't eccentric but they are set so that they give a bit more camber - not a massive amount but it does shift it over to being negative (as a guess I'd say 0.5* or so) - I found them on Ebay and as I understand it they are from old for autos.
Clement - It's good you haven't got rust to deal with! I am finding that the rust isnt so bad its when people bodge things to avoid dealing with rust - I have some photos of the passenger side rear tub which can prove this!
Where are you in France?

I'm in Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne region (the moutains in the middle)! I am lucky to have a car that hasn't been bodged, but it's the one thing I wouldn't have accepted to buy. I had been lurking various old car forums and I had seen bodging is the worse thing that can happen to a car.
It does have a bit of rust, for example the rust in the RH strut tower just pierced through the metal but it's a very small hole in a strong area so I just want to stop it spreading instead of messing everything.

I had forgotten to add a few photos before I finished last week, I thought I would tackle the left wheel arch which is not going to be a fun job! I was working on the panel below and realised that they are rippled which will catch the light when its painted (some time from now) so i filed a bit of it and it seems to be smoother. I did cut the section out and it is now tacked but I need to run a seam down and then its done I also managed to make one of the jacking points for a first attempt it went well but for the second go I will attempt to put the ribs in after I have done the first bend and see how it looks

I was thinking, will you be at the Nats this summer ? I'm pretty sure I'll drive there with my Tina so it'd be cool to meet people from this forum! I'm amazed that your girlfriend wants to weld. Damn, if all English girls are like this I gotta get myself one sometime. French girls just want to go on holiday and being looked after

I am going to go down but the Cortina won't be ready but it would be good to meet you
She is pretty sympathetic about me and the cortina plus she wants a 100e when she passes her test! She does like being looked after though!

Just saw that you had GAZ make you coilovers for the front, could you PM me how much it cost? It would obviously need shorter inserts then, do they do that?
I have to check the maximum possible lowering for my car, so I can think about coilovers and reset leaves at the back (and shorter struts as well I guess). It's not a short-term plan, but I'd love to do it! Sorry for the thread hijack...

Clement - they were £250 as they are without aluminium cups and springs and I supplied my own dampers as they use the kingpins - totally recommend it but I'd say send some spare dampers over if you're using the cortina daily
They ask you what you want for them so I'm sure they will sort you out - let me know how it goes!
Thanks Thames - do you still have the van?
Danburger - that's a great collection of cars you have! Glad you've got some mojo to work on your Granada

That's the point, I have a spare set of front struts (not just the insert, the whole strut/hub thing) that need refurbishing, springs I'd have to figure out but what do you mean by aluminium cup? Is it the top spring cup? Can they supply these and the springs? The problem is that being in France, if I do this I'd better do it all at once... I'll keep you posted, but it won't happen before quite a long time Thanks a lot for the details!

yea the body and insert was knackered - they separate the king pin/ brake mounting off the damper and drop it onto new shiny ones!
I did buy the cups which are for the springs and the springs from Gaz - again they speced them to what i wanted

I went to do some practice welding earlier (my welder died of death but I have been lent a similar and much newer one from a friend - The problem is its a lot more efficient so I've been blowing holes which is bad!) The problem I had was that the moment I get some time to get used to the welder I ran out of gas so I thought I'd start refurbing the side light and indicator units
I've got some pics I'll put on tomorrow
