getting close ;D 5k rpm is about 87-92 on the speedo. I've never intentionally taken it beyond 5250rpm. had an indicated 96mph once (private flight path of course). If it has a 4.22:1 diff & still has the original type 4 speed 'box, then I think something is wrong with one of your instruments, as the gearing is 16.2mph per 1000 rpm, so 5000 rpm is 81mph. However, I found that the van I had as my first car would happily run off the top of the speedo on the flat, & that was with a lower diff....... Having (twice ) lunched the bottom end doing that, I fitted a tacho & oil / water dual guage to keep a better eye on it. I also asked my then boss (a mechanical engineer, race engine designer & builder etc) what the safe redline was for a standard 1098 - his answer was that it shouldn't be taken beyond 5k & I must have been running mine at over 5.5k.... no idea what diff its got, I haven't changed it/looked at it since I bought the car! speedo has been changed since the 96 run, I think it was faulty but it does give me bragging rights ;D good job I didn't have a tacho in there at the time. 80-85 is true as I have been clocked by jonnysierra in bob the saph. 5500rpm is the absolute limit for stock 1098 pistons because this is when the piston skirt falls off.

the type 9 sierra box conversion on a 1275 a series is good because you still get good around town driveability and good motorway crusing, upping the final drive can make feel like your pulling away in second

Are the conversion parts readily available?

There's a couple of places doing type-9 conmversions for the Minor. Try www.jlhmorrisminors.co.uk and www.morrisminor.co.uk. I know trhe last one even do an glassfibre trans tunnel (it's a bolt-in panel on the Minor) especially for the Minor. Or you could source bits from one of the Spridget specialists if the bellhousing etc. works out cheaper.

If it does fit, I'd say go the whole hog and fit a Dolly Sprint motor. The Dolly back axle's about the right width for a Minor as well.........

OOOH That souns fun! Last night I was thinking about the engine and I thought a 2.0 16v out of a rover 220/420/620/820. 140 bhp. Cheapish engines, and apparently they attatch straight to a rover p6 2000 gearbox . Then after a while there's the option to put a turbo engine in ;D

Those T Series motors bolt up to the SD1 5-speed (LT77?) box if you use a Sherpa Bellhousing. I haven't measured one up, but seeing as it's based on the O Series block, and the O series replaced the B Series, it can't be much bigger than a B Series which does fit in a Minor.

I wouldn't say knowledgable, just inquisitive................ As for the Sherpa bellhousing, the diesel Sherpa's also used the O series block, so any 5-speed Sherpa bellhousing will do. As an aside, late 70's Sherpas used an O series motor mated to an MGB-derived box, so the MGB box (esp. with O/D) is also a possibility.

Sweet! What do ya think is the best bet?? Think it'd be better to buy a cheap complete car with a decent engine.

I'd always do that (provided you've got the room) because:- 1) you can hear the engine running and possibly even test drive it. 2) you get a load of stuff that you can sell on, thus offsetting the purchase price.
