I've had a go at making complex repair panels for my bug many moons ago, when i was younger and sharper and less short tempered. IT ISN'T " EASY " although i did make a lot, saving a packet ( its interesting to note, that my panels are the ones that are still ok 12 years later....hah) Yes, you can become very good given time, but as someone else said, its not a skill thats " needed " any more...

I was told a story recently about a guy that did a very similar job to this. Apparently he was restoring a Morris (I think) at work - just a 'normal' bodyshop, not a specialist and didn't know you could get the panel off the shelf, the guys left him working on the car at the end of the day and when they got back in the morning there he was with the perfectly hand-formed panel that he'd bashed out of sheet steel overnight. Even if the skill is a pretty basic one, you have to admire the bloke's talent and patience don't you? Impressive stuff.

I trained and qualified as a coatch builder when I left school.
I can make wings rear quarters at a push bonnets roof pannels are a no no.
There is two kinds of pannel crafter. One needs and uses a english wheel, linisher and power hammer.
The tru craftsman uses just a handfull of hammers dollys some heat for shrinking ect.
The dude who trained me was a tru craftsman and always said you gotta be born with it the tru skill cant be learnt.
Isnt it tru that aston martin are using presses these days?

What has been said already basically.
I'm always impressed by anyone who can fabricate anything neatly, I'm just too ham-fisted and impatient.

Awesome, that is a proper restoration! I get the impression the guy could fabricate pretty much anything if you gave him something to copy!

flippin heck the mans a genius!! Let's see container car to Thailand £700. About £20,000 worth of resto at UK prices £1,000, £700 back again, so say £2000 all in. Yup sounds ideal!! It's a global economy right. Just need to set up an office in the UK to channel the flood of work! ps what's that about the samba forum slagging him off. Are they mad! The Seppo's used to send cars to germany after the second world war,to take advantage of the skills possesed by Starving ex Stuka builders. Then the phillipines were discovered in the 80's as a place to take advantage of high skill levels and pitiful pay rates. The phillipinos soon realised that "Joe" was ripping them off and that lurk died out. Now ,they are sending cars to Hong Kong, and I think you will find that sending cars to India may cause problems with their buracracy...I know it is almost impossible to get old cars out of India. Spain also had superior panel beaters, they claim to have invented the concept of sheet metal work, building suits of Armour and I've had a car body built by Spaniard here years ago.His only tools being hammers and Block of wood with a special shaped hole in the center.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
