Weve forgotten so much in the west. Watching craftsmen in india made me realise. In countries where labour is so cheap that its cheaper to have someone spend hours making something than it is to have it machine made means skills like these survive.

That's amazing! I agree with vw - a lot of crafts that have long died off over here live on in the developing world, and it's amazing to see what those guys do! Pure craftsmanship, I wish I could do that!

flippin heck the mans a genius!! Let's see container car to Thailand £700. About £20,000 worth of resto at UK prices £1,000, £700 back again, so say £2000 all in. Yup sounds ideal!! It's a global economy right.
Just need to set up an office in the UK to channel the flood of work!
ps what's that about the samba forum slagging him off. Are they mad!

This might sound a bit off, but its not really that hard.
Ok, i cant do it (at least i assume i cant, ive never tried) but the skills arent that difficult. You just need to be shown how.
I can shape small pieces as i have silversmithing qualifications, but ive never really tried any large sheet steel work, only making reasonable simple repair panels.
the hard part is finding someone in england who still has these skills so they can teach you.
As these skills are still so prevelant in asia/south america, sounds like a dam good excuse for a nice long winter break in thailand/india ;D

youve gotta be kidding me? You cant say its easy untill you can show me a panel you have made youself, even then you have had tuition and a lot of practice being a silversmith.

I have seen people do that kind of thing in the UK as well, awesome to watch. There is a lot of talent in that kind of work, but its time (labour cost) thats the killer on something like that in the uk.

when first left school i worked for an old guy that used to do all the old skool sheet metal fabrication stuff, some stuff like that admitedly not that detailed , used to do mostly resoration jobs on cars that parts were not availiable for and custom jobs were parts never existed for in the first place ;D but he tought me alot of those skills sadly the market for such skills now days is very limited not to mention very labour intensive so not cost effective .

I never said it was easy ;D, just pointing out its maybe not as hard as some people think. Theres no black art, its just about understanding the pricipals and having the techniques explained and demonstrated. Then practice. I'm not knocking the guys skills, he's obviously very talented and patient (sp), all I'm saying is we could all do it with some training.
