Right, it has now started. Read below if you are unfamiliar with this thread. Updates later. Just to mention, I cannot play a note of music, though I wish I could. I always look at ScaryOldCortina and wish I had just 2% of his talent and skills. Tonight on the way home from London, my wife Nicola texted me to ask if she could open a parcel that had been addressed to Mr & Mrs "Grizz" Of course I said, who is it from ? She texted back Gary in Oklahoma, and then refused to tell me what was in it, except that she loved the contents. When I got home she gave me a cuppa tea, let me greet the cats etc, then presented me with the box in the photo below. I will not explain it all, but will say that there was a challenge in the total package..... now the trick is for you guys to figure it out and let us know if you can see what the challenge is that Gary put to me. It is not too cryptic, just look at the contents and think a bit latteraly. Thanks Gary. .... there goes my holiday break 8) All three the cats went mad for the catnip, a super charged variety grown for Garys cats. Once the challenge has been identified (and I hope you can figure it out) I will change the title and then start the build thread on here. First clues are in the top photo. In 24 hrs I will add another clue etc, etc.

He wants you to make 3 boxes: 1) a jewellery box for his Mrs 2) a fishing tackle box for him 3) a nick nak/ spice rack box. The catnip, sweets and cigars are by way of payment, and the cigar box doubles as a template for his order. doubt I'm even close, but it's such a random assortment of bits it's the only thing I could come up with!!

You're going living in the wild for the entire duration of the xmas period at the place shown on the photo, living off nothing but cigars, sweets and whatever animals you chose to kill (by either fly fishing, or perhaps bare knuckle brutality) and put on the bbq. To make the experience a bit more festive some delightful jewellry is provided for your other half or yourself should you choose. The catnip is to distract the cats whilst you are away, and the coin/pick/eyelets must have just been in the bottom of the box by accident!
Sorted.
Looking forward to the real answer..........................

I'm drawn to cigar box guitar too by the plectrum cut from a credit card, is that BBQ rub spices in the film canister? The eyelets are too big for bridge string stops and probably too small for sound holes though.

I haven't got a clue. Sending a bag of dried green leaves across from the states was a brave move! Here's the thing Ben, that parcel has taken a year to get to me.... It started out as just homegrown catnip and an Oklahoma Quarter from Gary, I had sent him a Christmas outfit for the tamest of his feral cats, and the challenge to get it on and get a photo.... photo now proudly his avatar pic. Customs picked up on the catnip and coin, and returned it to him, he then repackaged and enlarged the parcel, and the post office did not complete the customs declaration correctly, so it was returned again, the third time was lucky, and it got to us yesterday. Along with the challenge on the back of said postcard. I love all the responses, including Thorstens.

I got it in one, as I had seen them before. I will now change the title. The build should commence as soon as I find 3foot of hardwood in 2x1 inch configuration. Here.... have some pics and a Youtube of a CIGAR BOX GUITAR. I will be keeping to basic accoustic, maybe electrify one if I get into it. These were all built by Gary in Oklahoma. He makes the jewelery and fishing lures too. Most traditional CBG's are three string, but people prefer 4 string and some make up to 6 stringers. They work well for the blues. And a combo built by another guy. Specially for the winner. A six stringer. And a 3 stringer. "Belinda"

So I was right with the cigarbox guitar.........What about smoking the catnip? ;D My first thought was 'cigarbox guitar' as I want to make one myself as soon as I find a nice old cigarbox, I picked up a cacky Yamaha electric guitar at a local auction which will donate it's 'bits' for. You might wanna take a look on here, I've visited this site quite a bit for ideas/inspiration so it might be helpful. www.cigarboxnation.com/This will be yet another 'Grizz thread' I bookmark......Can't wait though, best of luck Rian.

I've made a couple of what could be considered cigar box guitars, one with what was a wooden cutlery box, and the other a tin game box that had a murder mystery weekend game in it.
Neck on the cutlery box is a hemlock decking rail spindle, a little too narrowish and too deep for a neck, but 3 strings is OK, fretted with wooden cocktail sticks, and the neck on the tin one a planed down pickaxe handle fretless. If you have a band saw you could split a hardwood pick handle into two and make two. A guy on the "Cigar box it's an addiction" made a complete guitar out of pallet using the pallet wood for the body and the neck.
electrifying is easy, you can do it basically using a basic 27mm piezo element from Maplin and a 1/4" guitar jack.
My two sound totally different, the wooden box lack resonation but sounds OK through an amp, the tin box sounds more like a cross between resonator and a banjo.
I have been using medium acoustic strings, but have just picked up a couple of packs of electric lightweight strings as I have had trouble getting them to tune to DAd for open playing. The electric strings should tune up easier under a lower tension.
One event not to miss is Boxstock in West Bromwich, I went to the second one last year but couldn't afford the 3rd one this year as I am broke again LOL.
