I was thinking today if I should carry on building my model A with a 351 Cleveland and not be able to afford to drive it very much and probably sell it not long after finishing it or should I sell the Cleveland put a big turbo diesel in it and drive the wheels off it everyday. That's mine does anyone know of any other diesel rods about? If you do any info on engines and gearboxes would be most helpful and photos of course.

I've just swapped a Pinto efi and 4 speed auto into my A pick up , and added LPG . At it's current state of tune about 135 bhp ,0-60 in 8ish , and equivalent of around 70mpg on lpg ,40 on petrol.
Having said that if I'd bought my Rover 75 diesel earlier for reference the A would have a BMW 2.0td in it now. As much power as a Rover V8 stock and a chip takes the torque into 5 litre petrol torque ( 260lbs/ft) plus 30 around town and ,best so far of 50 on arun.
Used to run a '41 Chevy p/u with a Transit 2.5 di 90bhp and 5 speed manual , 40 on a run , basic but torquey with no electronics.

I would exactly call it "hot" with a small, slow tractor engine fitted.. If your gonna go diesel just make sure it is a BIG diesel.

I've always liked to use the cars I build as much as possible and a model A everyday with diesel economy is looking really appealing at the moment

I love the sound of this. My recently expired '94 BMW 525 TDS Tourer used to go a lot better than a 17yr old diesel estate had any right to and upset a good many people in newer petrol cars. It had been chipped to put back the performance BMW de-tuned out of it and being an old straight six would probably look reasonable under the bonnet. I'm feeling the building bug itching away. Really need to move the present projects on to make something nasty.

how much mileage are you going to do in it?
what's the MPG difference between diesel and petrol and more importantly between diesel and LPG?
See, you don't have a massively aerodynamic vehicle there... I doubt its ever going to be like a modern small hatch to run.
A big, snarly, truck-like diesel would be a hoot. A mate had a Dodge Ram with the 5 cyl Cummins TD in it and that sounded ace with chrome stacks up the cab back etc. But economy? Hmmm.... not exactly like driving a Micra.
Question is, if you built it as a diesel would you always be disappointed it wasn't a V8...?

lots of mention about BIG diesels... but they're HEAVY. HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. that A frame you have will not hang with a big truck diesel.
a small turbo diesel would scoot an A truck around nicely.... say, something out of a VW. could make it look somewhat proper, and if you're fixin to keep the hood/sides, it'd be no worries. plus the width of a small diesel would actually fit between the hood sides.
biggest i'd think of would be something along the lines of the Isuzu NPR 4 cyl turbo diesel.
now, as far as coolness? i think it'd be f'ing rad, 'specially in an A pickup... and that's coming from a dude in the land of gasoline burning monsters (USA).

The graffiti paint job might not be to everyones taste, but at least it shows that diesel in a hotrod doesnt mean it has to be some gay ratrod rubbish!!!

I am sorry but I know times are hard ect ect
But it's just wrong
Diesel is for lorries and farmers
That vid off the hot rod doing doughnuts has bound to be more pollution and worse for the environment than a finely tuned petrol

Who cares about the "pollution"? Especially when 99% of what's coming out the exhaust, is virtually pure carbon (it's literally "soot" ) I Love dervs, But agreed, zero point putting in a big cummins - the extra weight you're shoving in, just removes all power benifits of the engine! Even the relatively "small" cumming 4BT, the 4cyl jobbie, weighs an absolute ton! VW 1.9Td can easily make 200Bhp with the right turbo, and gives over 300lb/ft of torque! Rover L-series makes 110Bhp straight out of the sack, whilst making along the lines of 200lb/ft of torque (efforts are being made to fit bigger turbos, to get over 200Bhp, which will see close to 350lb/ft! Just kinda limited for space in the standard FWD layout) The days of slow dervs, are well and truly gone

I'm not worried about pollution or the environment but not having to budget £100+ every time you go to a show would be nice and I know it's brick shaped so is never going to do 50mpg but but 30ish instead of 10 if your lucky would mean I'd would be used everyday.
I love V8s nothing sounds better and a stock rover in a light car is one thing, I used a V8 Morris minor every day but a small block is a different matter and I think I'd get more enjoyment from a diesel rod I use everyday than a V8 one that gets used once a month

The doughnuts clip was a bit lame after seeing the pic of it. I really liked that other video though that Sophers put up. It reminded me of an old Morris Commercial truck that I spotted on ebay a few years ago and fell in love with (but couldn't afford or home). A Rat-Truck is deffinately on my list of things I must own before I die. Though it might end up as a Rat-Landie.

yups, with derv, as long as you get one with a decent pump, you can run on veg oil! (mine currently is!)
another option, is the pug/citroen XUD dervs. 1.9Td is good for an easy 140Bhp/150lb/ft, the 2.1 will make around 155bhp/160lb/ft with the same mods. Both bolt straight upto an LDV pilot gearbox (also need a pug 306 HDi flywheel+clutch pressure plate, and a Ford Galaxy clutch friction plate) Gearbox is the nicely strong R380, with standard ford propshaft flange pattern
Keep to as light an engine as possible, to make life easy. No point fitting a big lump in something that small tbh. The frame simply wouldn't cope
