The Redex is there because many moons ago I had a Honda SS50 with a seized piston and was told to soak the bores in Redex iirc. Nearly 30 years on I have the problem twelvefold lol. The SS50 did free but that was with the head off and a large drift down the bore. I'll just need to try everything like diesel etc. Thanks again. Am off to paint the sill today

The best dismantling lubricant (IMO) is Plus Gas... hasn't failed me yet. I'd get some down the bores and wait for it to work its' magic

Diesel down the bores and don't be shy with it..change the oil once it has freed off as a fair bit will end up in the sump

It is a worry Mark I reckon if I take out the engine I'll end up detailing the front suspension and painting the engine bay plus all the work that a stripped down engine would lead to. I reckon it would add another 2 or 3 years to the job and God knows how much cash. Go on you know you want to:)

You'll find all of these photographs useful, it's alarming how easy it is to forget what went where after only a very short period of time. It all looks pretty good and like you say, sorting out those niggles behind the dash is best done now so you don't have to dismantle again in the future (hopefully).

Not really sure what to do about the dash. After a bit of Mr Sheen the glovebox lid looks nice. Plenty of burr which makes it interesting. The dash however has very little detail and a bit damage so I might have a go at putting some new veneer on. The lacquer has that milky look in parts but can be picked up easily so maybe do that and just re-varnish. I think they put far too much coating on tbh which makes it look more like plastic than wood. glovebox lid is niceand againdash not so interestinga little damage herelooks like old lacquer could be picked off easily enough

Nice work on that dash, looks to me like that veneer is perfectly save-able, I reckon its just the lacquer going hazy which is hiding the Burr detail. Some Wood Nitromors should lift off the old lacquer without damaging the veneer. When we re-lacquered the dash on my mates Wolseley, we gave give it a very gentle sand with some fine wet and dry paper (1200 or so) then lacquered it with rattle cans, but we brushed some celly thinners into the veneer first and did a light coat to really help the lacquer really sink in and darken the wood / lift the burr pattern. Then we just buried it under 5 / 6 cans of halfords lacquer and it looked proper

hi pal what plans do you have with the air con , r12 upgrade or leave it as is and open the window when its warm ? I ditched mine as it didn't work and the compressor weighed a ton, the car actually sits slightly higher at the front now , but I would rather have got the system working . Your car will be a fine example when finished , and worth a right few bob.

Hi again actionslaxx. I must admit I don't know that much about aircon but would like to have mine working.
One of the reasons I've never lifted the engine out is because of this business about needing to have the system discharged then re-charged again.
Prob cost a fortune for someone to come out and do it. The other week however I saw something on Ebay for about £40. Some sort of kit to do it yourself. I'd be interested in that.
I sometimes wonder about the value of this car. There have been a couple of coupe models went for £20-£30K but even in show condition I'm not sure this would be £15k.
There is a very nice one on Car&Classic for £12K but it's been on for ages.
If mine was up and running I think I'd be lucky to get £5 for it and there's no way I'd sell it for that after the work I've done.

Looking good I have an S1 It's complex cars and they take a lot of your time and Money! Take great care when you Work on the vacuum system! The plastic is old and brittle! And rare ad poor quality wobbly children's play pony droppings! If the car has been standing for ages without running then i would not worry to much about the ac fluid! It has probably leaked of a long time ago (saying this without knowing which kind of system Jaguar fitted in the first place) Keep up the good Work

Awsome job so far....you knew you wanted to after all:) you will be surprised at the amount of small "issues" you will resolve, that you would not have known about. One thing i have forund is that i spent quite a time cleaning electrical connectors and earths, and also ensuring that the connectors actually connect, ( crimping the ends to ensure tight fit etc), this could cure various electrical issues you may have had... I would also replace everything rubber, or at least check for perishing whilst your there. Cant wait for updates!!
don't worry about aircon gas...thats long gone
