Yeah I noticed you guys in the UK seem to like the old school (widened steelie) or classic look when it comes to wheels. Not just in the UK- I think NZ has a big fan base for smaller, old period wheels too. Its each to their own for sure but I think big bling wheels always look odd on old cars. I remember fitting big tsw alloys to my first chevette back in 97 thinking it looked cool but I look back at photos of it and it looks wrong. Mx5's have 14" wheels? You could get some awesome steels - super wide and have a fat low stance that'll look well cool but still have people guessing as you peel away from them at the lights in your 'old car' ;D But hey as you say- easy to change wheels whenever eh, Top work going on here. Nice fabrication. I just started a new job at a automotive resto firm in Nelson and am busy fitting a Bedford cf with a falcon 4L straight 6. I wish I was dealing with a smaller engine in a smaller car like you! Fair Comment all round. I've committed to big brakes so need to stay with 17" wheels-might get 16" in a pinch. My stud pattern is 5 x 114.3 so the MX wheels are out. My 205/17/40 tires are only 8mm larger in Dia than the 155/13/80 Herald tires so apart from width the fitment in the space is sort of similar but obviously more dramatic. I can get some more old style wheels later if that's what I think it needs but I'm not a fan of steel wheels at all. I have a certain vision in my head so will wait and see what the final look is like-I think it will work I use to work on the CF's with the 202 Holden's in them and the odd 350 Chev but never seen one with a falcon engine in it. Off to the UK on Sunday for a month so might come back with a whole new perspective-will try and catch up with a few of the Herald lads so they may convert me

Ahhh bigger brakes. Yep- that makes it tricky. In the future some of those cragar eliminators wouldbe a cool sort of style- oldschool meets new. They are available in 16/17s
Off to the UK now- while we are having all this lovely weather recently?..... (its probably sunnier in the UK right now..)

I'm back on the car again after my UK trip. I'd just like to say sorry to the herald boys for not getting in touch with you guys-all good intentions but just couldn't get to London or out east to Rob although I did ring you Rob and left a message. Spent all my time out west and in Birmingham. Started doing the rear chassis and mocking up for the Fuel tank and Rear sway bar. Going to put the tank in the rear under the boot. I figure this cant be any worse than having it in the boot as per Herald or 2 tanks as in the Vitesse's. At least it will be outside the boot. I just can't get it in anywhere else. I'll be fitting little 2"drop mounts for the Sway Bar mounts.

Hi welcome back, sorry didn't get your message but hope you had a good time in Blighty ;D Did you get the parts you needed.
See you've cracked on with the project, l've ended up getting a TR3 tank which will go under the rear deck, the old tank position was ok but not perfect also gave me a problem with exhaust rooting.

I saw this 1970 VW Variant down the road from my place. I thought it would fit right in on "RR". Just to add some more debate about modern wheels on old cars I think this car looks spot on. It runs 17"wheels with 40 profile tires-the same as my tires. This is the look and stance I'm trying to achive with my herald. Its been lowered and has MX5 seats fitted. The "No Bumper" look really suits this car. Still running a standard 1600.

Thinking I might do some flare something like these. I'll need to cut some clearance & tie in the inner guards as well. I want to try and keep the Herald shape guards if I can. I don't want to go any bigger than I need for clearance.

I can't quite see from the photos, but it looks like you've got a lot less poke than I had to deal with. You may get away with a smaller tyre and a bit of stretch, combined with flatening/removing the inner arch lip. The standard arches will 'pull' out slightly to give you about 1/2" more also, without looking any different.
Are those the actual wheels you'll be using? If not you could get some with a smaller offset to give more clearance maybe.

Hi Mr Speedy. I'm glad you saw this as your the man with the experience on Vitesse flares. How's your new motor-broken anymore wheel studs lately These are the wheels I'm using and I already have +48 offset. I'm going to take the wheels off and see where the body sits once it's sitting fully in position. If I can get the guards out a bit I'll still need to separate the inner guard and raise it to get tire clearance when the suspension travel hit the bump stops. I'd like to have a little arch overlap on the wheels as this will look better I think than seeing the full wheel and tire. Will make some cardboard test pieces first. all opinions welcome

Nah, not broken any studs yet. I'm to chicken to push it hard in corners! lol Yeah, I think once you get the body mounted proper and square you'll see much better what you're dealing with. From what I can see atm you've got about 1/2" of poke? If you seperate the inner and outer arches you'll be able to pull it that much, but any more and it'll start to look like this; Which to my mind, looks gash!! A bit of tyre stretch will give clearance on the rubber maybe, but not help with the rim. If you go down the route of arch extensions like mine, I can't see any way to keep the original shape

Yer l was thinking of that vitesse with the quatro arch's when l saw speedys reply. I would be incline to just cut away what is needed to clear your tyre's when everything has been set up with the body down and the suspension done, l think if you try and guess what it will look like you could do a lot of work only to have to re-do it later Then when it's all in place you will have a better idea what you can do As for the wheels you've chosen l like them ;D it will give it a real street sleeper look The wheel in the quatro Vitesse look wrong to me make it look more like a 4x4!

I don't mind your look but if I went "a La" your style I would angle them more vertical. The clearance is mostly compromised at the back of the arch so when the body is sitting correctly it will be back about 25mm so this will improve things a bit. The herald bodies taper back in this area hence less clearance.

Hi Rob, Good advice -my thoughts exactly. I'll get the wheels off and sort all suspension clearances first and see where I sit. As Speedy points out it may only need small adjustments to clear the outer guards. How ever the inners will need mods to allow for wheel travel. My panel beating skills are not as well honed as a lot of the other blokes on this site-I'm always in awe at guys like Em & Seth. Hope yours is progressing- I haven't been surfing the site much lately.

Yeah I like the look of those Atchi. I don't need a lot of flare so can cut these to suit. They might do the job. Price is great too. I'll get the Body down and make some cardboard copies to see if they might work. Thanks.

Hello mate, nice to see you back on the Herald again!
Sorry we couldn't get together while you were here, but it's a long way from London to Birmingham just for a pint!
Good luck with the wheel arches!

Good luck with the wheel arches! Thanks Em, Back in 2 years so we both might have more to talk about with our projects and I might get a ride in your car ;D. I will just take my time thinking about these bloody guards. I need to get these right!!! I hope you've got some more pic's for us soon. Cheers, Dave.

Two years, eh? I'd better pull me finger out!
Can you take anything off the mounting faces on the wheels? Sure you'll sort it, you've come this far!
Will try and make (and photograph) some progress over the weekend!

It's surprising how well the rear arches look when you cut them out to a true radius around the tyre profile. It's a big brave step to do it tho, trust me I know! lol
Looking good tho. A nice subtle arch there.
