I'm really liking the look of the rear end now.
I keep thinking about ways of improving mine, but without having to take the body off!
Then again, the lower cornering speeds help stop me breaking wheel studs. Something I'm rather wary of with 205 rear tyres! lol

Top progress! There's something about seeing accurately cut box section and neat new brackets going in that hints at the level of awesomeness that this car is heading towards…! I think this is shaping up to be something really rather special. Thanks for your comments Em and Speedy- Pleased with the outcome so far. I'm liking it a lot now too. Seeing I'm putting so much bloody work into it I think its worth doing proper. Getting this rear end complete will be a major milestone as even getting to this stage has been a lot of work.

:-/dooh waffer thin chassis, not what you need, you may have to double skin it at those mounting poit to stop the steel from tearing, they double skined the chassis at the front where the suspension mounts are and as far back as the front outrigger to strengthen it.

Good Advice Rob. I might slip in a backing plate and spot weld it in and then weld the flush plate over the top. All will be revealed when I cut this section out no doubt. I have tap tested around the holes and it doesn't seem to be to thin further out. Still, seen far worse on those UK Heralds-salt is not just bad for the arteries eh

As you may have seen from mine, it's very difficult to get arch flares to work with the rear end on these due to the way the wheels tuck up. My track is approx 1600mm and that needed about 3" arches to just finish flush with the sidewalls. This back end conversion is looking good tho

Hi,
Looking good! I hope that 10mm each side isn't going to give you too much head ach. What size box section did you use? I'm thinking of using 30mm box with 3mm thick wall.
Do you work in laser/waterjet cut business? It is very handy to make if you can draw up yourself, for sure.
Cheers Atchi

Cheers Atchi Thanks Atchi, I'm not to far away at 1500mm, I don't think I'll need flares but will just flare out the existing guard arches to keep the look. I have used 50mm X 1.6mm box section. Bigger box section is more rigid than smaller section and it sort of fitted my brackets better. I went for 1.6mm to keep it as light as possible. I work in the marine industry and have some very talented co-workers who do the CAD drawings for me. Just email away the drawings and get back beautiful new metal bits with pre-cut holes- To easy ;D

I would go so far as to box the chassis in critical locations, especially where the rusty bits were. An added bonus is it'll make the chassis stiffer. -Steve

Yep I agree. Because I'm doing this in my garage with curse word welding gear & not to mention welding skills this is essentially a dry fit of the whole car before I strip it down again for all the finer details. You know the drill. I will be making sure its fully up to spec and done right by some tame welders I know & in a proper engineering workshop. In New Zealand we need a LVV certificate (Low Volume Vehicle) for projects like this so it gets inspected to make sure it's not made out of wood .

In New Zealand we need a LVV certificate (Low Volume Vehicle) for projects like this so it gets inspected to make sure it's not made out of wood . Hah, yeh, I seem perpetually in that mode. A quick tip, then, I've found works well for making boxing plate templates for inside the frame rails is to use some cardboard (any old junk you have) and a hammer. Hold the cardboard against the section of frame you want to box and hit/tap the cardboard with the hammer. This will leave a mark on the cardboard, or even cut through it. Cut it out then you can use that to mark up the steel for the boxing plates. When you're ready, you can use your welding skills to, at least, tack the plates in so your friendly weldor guy can finish them off. Remember to put a bevel on the edges of the plate so you (or your weldor mate) get good weld penetration. If you use a flap disk you can smooth the welds out and it'll look pukker ... Did you say which year MX5 your engine came out of? -Steve

Its an NA Model 1991 with the 1600cc engine. Plan to get it all going and fine tune handling & brakes etc and then later on build a Turbo engine when funds permit. Did score a LSD diff with the donor which is nice

Shame about the whole in the chassis; they really can get thin in places! Nothing that can't be sorted, though!

I'm sure we will have plenty of fun getting all the other problems sorted before we need to go faster. Mainly want the extra power for track day fun ;D although this is mainly designed for road use.

Thought I only had dodgy bits on the parts I cut off at the back of the chassis-not so bloody clever after all Will give it all due care and attention when I have all the add-on bits tacked up and it's clamped to a welding table.

Personally not a big fan of the wheels, but this project is brilliant! Yeah I noticed you guys in the UK seem to like the old school (widened steelie) or classic look when it comes to wheels. Not just in the UK- I think NZ has a big fan base for smaller, old period wheels too. Its each to their own for sure but I think big bling wheels always look odd on old cars. I remember fitting big tsw alloys to my first chevette back in 97 thinking it looked cool but I look back at photos of it and it looks wrong. Mx5's have 14" wheels? You could get some awesome steels - super wide and have a fat low stance that'll look well cool but still have people guessing as you peel away from them at the lights in your 'old car' ;D But hey as you say- easy to change wheels whenever eh, Top work going on here. Nice fabrication. I just started a new job at a automotive resto firm in Nelson and am busy fitting a Bedford cf with a falcon 4L straight 6. I wish i was dealing with a smaller engine in a smaller car like you!
