do it in 1st or reverse so the revs are low and no choke ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Actually, you'd be better off doing it in a higher gear, if you are worried about it coming off the axle stands and vanishing down the road. Seeing as you are only using idle speed to allow the wheels to turn, the engine is much, much more likely to stall if it's in 5th gear, than if it's in 1st... Of course, if you're polishing a wheel with no tyre, it's even more unlikely to go anywhere... good point... Me trying to get my brain round rev's, gearing and polishing a wheel while car perched on a single trolley jack kinda sent me off whack a bit there ;D

I have to admit that in my parents garage I once clamped a drill in a woodworking vice (pointing downwards) and then bolted an "adaptor" through the wheel centre bore and into the drill chuck...
It worked a treat but I suppose it could be viewed as "at bit hairy" and the next time I needed to polish a wheel I used the car which was much safer :-)
So I'd suggest getting yourself a lead light, a wooly hat, a thick coat and using the car :-D

Presumably if you rev the engine to 5000 in 5th it will get the job done in 20% of the time as well compared to doing it at 1000rpm, which will free up loads of time for going to hospital.

Long bit of string round the coil lead? or a long string of rosary beads ;D attached to your head so when it's cut off and flys out the garage it stop the motor and give you time to feel for the superglue and stick it back on ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Long bit of string round the coil lead? Nah, build an Insta-Stop: Put a breeze block over the brake pedal, and hold it up with a stick. Attach string to stick. NB: Only applicable to servo brakes.

Thank you so much for this thread!
I have just had to explain it all to my wife as she wanted to know why I was giggling so much! And now she's smiling like a loon as well!

lets not forget of course people the differential effect.. if he can successfully stop the other driven wheel from turning completely it will double the output speed of the wheel being polished thus saving even more time... (might have to strap it to a lamp post or something though if it has an LSD thingy)

What do you do though if your engine isnt working? I have a lathe, but my engine is stripped down in bits... Think i could strap some sort of belt device from the lathe to the driveshaft and use that to turn the hub? Has anyone tried this before?
.... wait for it....

It would have to be leather and one without one of those huge belt buckles that chaps in Texas seem to prefer tpo wear ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Oh and i take my car laithing very seriously tis why i still have 11 fingers and 11 (webbed) toes ;D

you could get trained hamsters to run on the input shaft of the gearbox really fast if the engine is out? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) might have to use some 80 grit paper though to get the same effect..........

I'm really short on time, so haven't got the time to do jobs like this normally, but I've been thinking...
...to save ALL the time required, I'm going to put a brick on the accelerator pedal and hang out the window with a bit of wet and dry whilst I'm driving to work!
