I was trained to use a lathe and no way can this compare. Even in a proper engineering workshop there are dangers but at least there are emergency kill buttons near the operator so machinery can be stopped - not so easy with a running car. Each to their own method with the accompanying risks but please don't advocate it's safe to others just because you are prepared to do it.

Oh well. Did see one though and it worked. Maybe a torquer motor though than a drill. I.ll work something out, even maybe just braving the weather and jack it up.

Mount the wheel on a hub, wrap a massive bit of string around the wheel, tie the other end to a local street urchin hepped up on Sunny D and strawberry bonbons, and tell said urchin that there's a shiny fifty pence piece for him if he keeps running away until the string goes slack.

Welcome back *n ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) eta - I've used a car as Delhi lathe before, I've also been trained to use a proper lathe too. BiAS - currently rocking a full set of digits and not responsible for kitten or nun deaths (probably)

I cant see whats so dangerous about it if you avoid the obvious pitfalls such as doing this on a foggy mountain top without a map and compass, doing it in a former combat zone that has not been cleared of mines etc etc

Each to their own and all that, and I am not one of these health and safety warriors but I can see that this technique is a risky one. All it takes in that position is to get whatever it is you are rubbing on the wheel to get caught in a part of the wheel other than the rim e.g. applying too much pressure and catching between the spokes, and you have a very fast, very spinny thing being pulled around by the wheel and hitting you in the face very fast. As has already been pointed out, you being more than an arms stretch away from being able to switch the ignition off just makes it even more stupid. Just remove the wheel and take your time......

What we are rubbing on the wheel is wet and dry paper, from personal experience that can become as fast and spinny as it likes from getting caught in the wheel, cause a no matter how wet it is, a spinning piece of paper is still only a spinning piece of paper.
Yes I have had bits of wet and dry catch the wheel and fire off towards my face, and non of them have got further than a few cm's before all momentum has gone and they are floating back to terra firma

Id do it ... I havnt done it before but considered it with those 928 rims and the carlton... Only thing id say regarding it is, Make sure the car has no where to run. I.e if it does somehow go off the jack, stands, chocks, then at least it should stall when it hits the floor. Shove a mattress in front or somthing,... Or a house.. Could be pretty bad if it made a break for that house accross the road ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) do it in 1st or reverse so the revs are low and no choke ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Also think id be polishing with a oribital or somthing too so that i don't get a finger in a spoke ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

Seeing as you are only using idle speed to allow the wheels to turn, the engine is much, much more likely to stall if it's in 5th gear, than if it's in 1st... Of course, if you're polishing a wheel with no tyre, it's even more unlikely to go anywhere...

do it in 1st or reverse so the revs are low and no choke ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) if you put the car in top gear and with the engine idling you'd have plenty of speed at the wheel for mucho polishing and it would be more inclined to stall should it fall over. Saying that though, the car really should be pointed towards a house and not a playground full of kids juuuuust in case...
