I posted this find in the abandoned thread..I'm currently working-located in the central Australian desert at Uluru..the big red rock...and sturdy vehicles are a must in this harsh hot environment..so..on the caravan site where a few of the workers live..i found this 1977 Merc W123-2.3 /4 cyl. auto..looking rather sad...its a one German owner from new..he died..son brought it here from Adelaide and lunched it out..so its been baking under a bush for 3 year...cars can be very expensive here usuallly..but the guy who owns it works at the same cultural centre where I do..so I made a pitch and got it for $1000-650squid... As found.. ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/088590ac.jpg) ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/1e104b31.jpg) So with my mate ..we put a new battery in it..filled her up with water for she was parched dry..repaired fuel line..sprayed Start U Busterd down the carbie and she burst into life..its got new plugs already on it and a new rear exhaust system..not a spot of rust..interior is really good apart from shagged from seat which will need rebolstered from underneath,,its missing the air con -power steering belts so I'm ordering them in...new fuel line..and mebbe a couple of new tyres.. ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/be3320aa.jpg) a hornets nest was hiding under the bonnet... ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/77c9997c.jpg) ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/2c7093a0.jpg) so I'm generally pleased as punch..I'm hoping the scrappies in Alice Spring might get me a new seat..and theres slight damage to the rear left passenger door...

thanks guys...its gonna have to remain stock...and i love the executive practicality of it...its got the original Becxker Mexico cassette player in it..that will stay a while unless i let my teenage sidekick convince me to put a banging soundsystem in it...and we ve also begun to notice the collection of cars the workers abandon here..so another potential project car we ve found is a 79 Corolla ...but we need to go thru some politics to gain ownership...otherwise this ol lady is now my desert cruiser...

With this minimal amount of work..and taking it to the local aboriginal community garage..it got its MOT-roadworthy...now I'm dealing with cosmetics like interior bits and exterior..may well get stuff thru New Zealand as this side seems to be xpensive...i was quoted $285 for a drivers seat base in the wrong colour...we may well try n repair it...i get the new tyres and rego this week..and my neighbor car audio mad teenager is gonna sort my sounds out...and sod the MB Tex interior..I'm cutting holes in the doors!...its running really well...its only 109PS and is the absolute budget version...but it wafts along and is about the only classic on the road...i cant buy body compound here in Yulara..but Alice Springs will provide that..its got tree sap splotched on the bonnet which is strong enough to raise the paint...

Ok..so now semi resident here in Melbourne..ive ordered rocker gasket..steering belt..eco-Bosch wipers,,and may well have to do front suspension bush..due to the battered nature of the beast..the paint on the bonnet has lifted due to gum from the bush it sat in..ive decided to satin black the bonnet..which then led me to realise thats what the rally cars looked like..so my question is..forget slammin...i want to raise it up..does anybody have experience with this or know how i should go about doing it..as such its rally look aint gonna be identical..i really need to do the priority stuff 1st..the Bundt alloys its on have to remain..cos i aint got storage for another set of wheels..and ill need to hunt down some 2nd hand spots so i can see kangaroos from 1km! ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/26c9f60c.jpg) the rally car was a 1977 as well...i like the simplicity of it.. ![](http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/fotorabia/7f401168.jpg) ok..sorry..not much changed!..outside where I'm staying..He's currently locked away at a local garage getting the exhaust done..so no access as its public holiday!

Nice ride! I had a 1987 Merc 190E (W201) that a previous owner had lowered excessively at the front. You can buy rubber spring pads that sit between the coil spring and the strut top mount of various thicknesses from MB dealers, so I bought some about 1" thick to raise the front end. Not sure if this applies to W123 models, but if it uses coil springs, I don't see why you couldn't adapt W201 spring pads to fit. www.performanceproducts4benz.com/mercedes-spring-pad.html

A guy I worked with, myself and my future brother in law drove from Melb to Port Douglas straight up (rather than go the coastal route). Took us from 10am on a Friday to 1am on a Sunday. Didn't have roo bars and I did all the blooody night driving but came close a few times. Just don't drive at dusk or dawn and you'll be fine.
Good to see people getting out and seeing a bit of Aus. You could spend a lifetime here and still not see everything.
(only just saw your PM too, give you a ring asap).
