Do as I say not as I do... I'e got a set of very old looking tyres on the VW and was a little concerned about running them up to Whitby and back so conciously had been keeping the speed down to like 50-55. On the way back got a bit enthusiastic and while passing a caravan at about 70 on the M1 near chesterfield it suddenly all got a bit out of shape... Just look how distorted that is... I dropped a load of the air out and drove it low (very slow) until I found a safe place to put the spare on, which to be frank is no better looking than the one I took off, pre-disintegration... Now I've really got to replace all 4 of them. These are all legal tyres too.

If nothing else, it's incentive for me to get the new tyres on mine when I've finished the engine rebuild. I'm currently running a set of legal but ancient tyres on the front.

Please do replace those tyres rubber is not like wine it doesn't improve with age.
Personally I wish they would put something in the MOT about the age of tyres fitted to the vehicle i,e anything made more than 10yrs ago becomes an automatic fail. Personally all of my tyres get changed at least every 5 years regardless of how worn they are.
edit where they really no signs of perishing on the sidewalls then?

I expect they are showing cords within those cracks which would be an MOT fail. From the tester's manual SC linked to;
"A tyre has a cut the length of which is in excess of 25 mm or 10% of section width, whichever is greater, deep enough to reach the ply or cords"

Had a similar thing happen on my Fiesta Xr2i alloys many moons ago. The pirelli ripped the whole tread off the centre in one big flap with the tyre still inflated Had to leave the car in Worthing and get a lift back down the next day from my dad with my 15"s in the back (locking wheel nut key was at home lol)

I changed the vintage 155-13s on the Hunter for new versions of the same tyre, difference is amazing Nothing wrong with the old ones, good tread, no cracking on the treads, sidewalls look ok (not good - but ok). It's just when you change them that you notice the difference

They are 165/80R13s - You're all bored of the "I have no money because they stopped my benefits 5 weeks ago" story but I am seriously brassic (hence not having changed the tyres yet) and I'd run 155s or 175s or anything that isn't those time bombs LOL
And while they all show signs of crazing they weren't crazed so very badly or I'd not have driven that distance on them.
Half joking I suggested they may be the original tyres it came on new... Those old Michelins are HARD tyres....

I think I've got a set of 155/80R13's in the shed which I bought for the Bond before I put the wide wheels on. You can have them for nowt buddy, if they're any good to you. And if the Passat is your only ride I'll deliver them rather than have you drive it on those bloody tyres! ;D

AFAIK, these had Pneumants on them as standard - that's what was on the spare and the back of my old man's D-reg when he bought it in 1990.

Meh, you can still get £60 MOTs... The Stag I had came with near enough no brakes and main beam sealed beam lights all on the front.
The 106 got MOT'd with two deformed tyres when I bought it (my tester failed the more obvious of the two). It really is surprising the difference a fresh set of tyre can make, even budget items over very old tyres.
Remember it does say on an MOT that it is not proof of a car being safe...

I was running a set on the Maxi that it had been sat on in a barn, flat, for almost 10 years. One of the rears was an almost bald Dunlop SP4. I bought my new Bridgestone Blizzak winter tyres off the intertnet and was having trouble finding somewhere to fit them but still had to get to work and back. When my mate fitted them after about a week and a half of driving on them, he said that they were easily the worst tyres he had ever seen. Never again if I can possibly help it.

That's pretty mental tyre wear! What's the date on the sidewall?!

I'm replacing a set of tyres on my mk2 polo just because they are now 10 years old, and still have 4mm of tread on them. As tyres get old, they dry out, so even though they still look fine, they don't grip as well as they did when new. a few years ago I read in that in America they were recommending changing tyres after 6 or 7 years just due to age issues. I wonder how the newer tyre compounds will compare to the older ones

Don't scrimp on tyres! Thats the problem with retro/old/classic cars, maybe in a barn 10 yrs or more, tyres like new, but seriously rotten and worn out! get em changed asap! But we all want period tyres, dunlop D4's old pirrelli etc, but save these to put on at shows etc, rather than risk driving on them. Sometimes its so hard to see if a tyre is no good so for peace of mind just change em
