From experience on the road and track I steer well clear of old tyres now. At the very least I've found they puncture much easier (which is hassle), and also when using old donated tyres on the drift car the inconsistencies of grip levels is quite astounding sometimes. Some tyres have even completely delaminated from having 5mm of tread to absolutely nothing in a single corner!

wasn't there talk of bringing an age limit in on tyres? I recently had a bit of a scare in my polo. all 4 tyres were legal in the eyes of the law. good tread, not perished etc. Used the car to go see a mate, wasn't driving fast as I was low on petrol and not really in any hurry anyway. Approached a tight right hander, the front under-steered (for some stupid reason I took my foot off the gas) next thing I know, the back end is trying to overtake me and I end up pointing back in the direction I was coming from. Now I've owned the polo for 5/6 years, so I'm used to how it drives and the only logical explanation I can come up with is that the tyres had gone old and hard as they were ok in the dry, but in the wet or damp, they were horrid to drive on. (the tyres were fitted on some alloys I took in px on some others, so ive no idea as to their history. they were also mixed budget brands which probably didnt help) So after this I decided I needed some better tyres. Fitted a set of good part worn michelin energy tyres and the difference is huge. no more vibration through the steering, much more predictable handling, stops better, it really has transformed the car. I don't think I will ever use old, budget tyres on the car again as to my mind, they really aren't worth the risk.

Ive got new tyres on all of mine,I'm not impressed with the whitebanded ones on the hatch tho, they must be an american version of the chinese ditchfinder as they are absolute curse word in the wet or on any loose surface......

Firstly if the pony express isn't sorted & they'll fit in the back of an Imp I might be able to help :-)
& yeah I NEED to change the tyres on my Imp, as when i took her into GFenn Lane Jeff calmly pointed out they stopped making them in 1988
i do have a set to go on my sports packs sat in Ary ready to go on, but unfortunately I'm working away tomorrow otherwise they'd be on then! (have got a 2011 audi to use for london )

I've got some camacs which are potentially original 1980s items... loads of tread and amazing in the snow but they once put me onto a grass verge so I steer well clear of them now! They're super hard aswell...

If they're mid-90s the DOT code will read like "185<"

That was a lucky escape with tyres like that! I once had to change someones tyres when I was at work in my old job. They were re moulds and the entire tread area was seperating from the original tyre casing underneath, not on one but on all four tyres! It was shocking!
I need to get some new tyres for the front on my transit, they are the originals from 1984!! and only covered 18K like the van! They look ok but definatly arent! Although the van isnt in use at the mo.

When all you have connecting you to the road is the rough equivalent of four large handprints it's always wise to make sure they're of suitable quality. It never ceases to amaze me when people take chances with tyres.

Scary stuff, sorry to be preachy but i think I’d have bought new rubber than driven a 300 mile journey needlessly... tyres and brakes are one thing I never take chances with esp if it's a family car, the difference between out of date cheapys and new quality rubber is quite literally amazing..
On bangers i usually fit decent part worn quality brand tyres than cheapy budgets, at least you know what you're getting, the only exception to that i once had a set of new GT's banged on a car that needed some tyres badly and that was all i could get in that size at short notice, they were actually very good...
