I am possibly looking for a van for lugging kit around and kipping in.
An LDv is on fleabay, 1998 with transit engine. Cheap enough, £600, but I know these vans have had a lot of bad press :/ Has this bad press got grounds or is it just a few problems over reported?
Thank you all

they're not unreliable, just archaic.
the basic design/underpinnings is straight outta the 30s- beam axle/live axle, parallel leafs all round, steering box. the fact the rear axle and front spindles/brakes were a direct bolt on swap to my '30s rover p2 chassis says a lot I think!! compared to say a transit of similar vintage, they're nowhere near as 'sophisticated'. a transit? sophisticated? compared to a LDV, then yes!!
a lot of the 'problems' are just over exaggeration or general pub/garage talk. lets face it, how many mechanics these days understand kingpins, leaf springs and steering boxes? just pretend its 30 years older than it is and youll be fine.

yep pretty much as Dez said. noisy, slow, uncomfortable and about as basic as you can get apparently but havent heard any bad reports reliability wise. but at the end of the day they're cheap to buy so surely sacrifices can be made

Is that the old transit DI engine? cant really go wrong with that. Slow and noisey, love them to bits.

I bought a LDV Cityvan with the Prima engine to replace a SWB Transit and was quite happy with it (other than the engine !). Even though not very old, low mileage and had previously had a gentle life was starting to rust in places . In fact the only problem over several years was the Prima engine so a Transit lump should cure that. Mate had a couple of LDV 400's with Transit engine and again reliable but rusted terrible. My advise therefore is whilst mechancials are OK be very wary about rust / rot - far more than other vans of a similar age.
BTW I've now got a Peugeot Expert and am delighted with it. Probably comparable to a Transit Connect LWB / HiTop but half the price.

I acctually prefer ldv 400s to drive over a transit of similar size. lot more grond clearance, and really never show their weight. moved many sectional garages with my old 400, before i mistakenly went out and bout a transit tipper. what would take one trip would take 3. Worst thing is the upright nature of screen and wind noise. And bloody door handles snapping off. But rust wise, they are miles better than trannys

If you don't mind welding then get the transit over the ldv, parts for the transit are easier to get and cheaper than the ldv, you can do mk4/5 transit rear brakes quicker than it will take you to get the drums off the ldv, and the mk4/5 transit drives far better than the ldv due to having independent front suspension and a steering rack as opposed to the steering box on the ldv. Weight carrying isn't really an issue with the vans, just put an extra leaf in the rear springs, fronts are plenty strong enough.

Vote for the LDV here. Cavernous inside in 400-spec. Noisy, slow, heavy, old-skool engineered in Birmingham. If I said 'proper van' you'd know what I mean because you know me.

Loads of cheap vans down near london at the moment with the coming of the LEZ next year, worth a trip if you can beat the exporters to them...

I would go for the LDV anyday, Ive worked for 11 years at an LDV dealership and most of the problems encountered were caused by lack of routine maintainence. ie kingpins not being greased , not lubricating locks and mechanisms, not keeping the rear brakes adjusted, etc etc. IMHO the convoys drive a lot better than a transit, more surefooted, and 100 times better in snow and ice than a tranny. Admitedly they are a bit agricultural in the cab, and a bit noisey, but a good stereo and speakers can sort that out don't buy the turbo version though, the wiring for the epic fueling system is problematic

My vote is fairly obvious unless it's a mk2 transit you're thinking of in which case I might have to change my mind again. Ross

Normally drive a renault master at work but after it snapped its cambelt recently (well before it was due to be changed!) we had to hire an LDV for the day.
It was like stepping back in time, so agricultural compared to the master .... didn't snap its cambelt though!!!!!

And Ive 'heard' the ford td in the ldv/transit is non intereferance should a cambelt go Ross But if you go for the earlier Pug 2.5 TD in the 400-series it's got good ol' fashioned camchain. No belt to worry about, ever. :-)

hasnt the transit TD lump got a chain anyway? Delivered to a garage the other day that was fixing one. He said the camchain skipped a tooth and instead of breaking the cam or dipping the valves into a piston, It just snapped off the cam bearing caps.. So hes thinking it needs a whole new head now too That was somthing like a 53 plate tho

So hes thinking it needs a whole new head now too That was somthing like a 53 plate tho It must have had some serious lack of oil/maintenance ! Since early 2000 all fords have a stainless steel, double row, endless, non-serviceable chain . The 'cam-belt' now just drives the diesel pump on common rails. By my understanding if the chains gone the engines scrap.
