As a tangent to Rmads Exhaust thread... I thought it was illegal for an exhaust to exit in front of the rear wheels on a road going vehicle.
However I then thought it wasn't as a lot of vans seems to have this...
Whats the deal?

Don't think there's anything wrong with it unless it is deemed too loud. The Sun-Tor is factory fitted side exit. Ran one on my Oxford for some years too.
Also, Caterhams etc?

McLaren SLR has them just after the front wheels.

So the only potential issue would be the decibel level.
Is that tested at MOT time? Or is that a police thing?

A car can be failed its MOT for having too noisy and exhaust but there's no actual definition so its up to your tester. Police of course can do what they like and if they don't like it Unless its silly loud all the time I doubt you'll have a problem.

Some people claim the issue can be with people burning themselves on the exhaust but I can't see how it differs from a normal exhaust.

Moggy Minor LCVs also have a side exit exhaust (just in front of the osr wheel).

Cobra kit cars and Westfields etc pass SVA like that - albeit with a heat shield over the body of the pipe.
Ones tucked under the sills are fine.
Only thing to think about is if you sit in traffic you often get the fumes coming back into the car if you have any of the windows wound down... Depends on the design of the car and the exhaust really.

Thats what I thought too... maybe thats an issue with lakepipes and the like. It is apparently illegal to have hot/moving engine parts exposed on a car, so with that in mind I could understand why lakepipes could be illegal. But then, as mentioned, Caterhams and such seem to be able to run pretty much everything bar the manifold externally. Plus bikes have their whole manifold exposed.

I've never heard of it being a legal issue.

I've never heard of it being a legal issue. I think I was getting my wires crossed as externally mounted exhuasts (like lake pipes and some 80's side pipes) are illegal/MOT fail on the heat issue... so they need a heat shroud to make them legal.. I think that has planted itself in my brain as "side exit pipes = illegal" ...

Nor me, I was also told there was no noise limit for the MoT. Good job really as the Mini sets off car alarms with the exhaust

Its seriously loud inside the car normally.... But the nice Exhaust heat Patina and 3` trailing flames on overrun Kind of make up for it I would love to do it but I am soon to have 4 link Bars running through where the silencer would need to sit.... Handling is more important at the moment for me ;D And I have just scored the Most sexual exhaust EVER ;D which I need to try and fit when I get home ;D ;D It is about 4` long and weighs about 2 kilos complete with a massive "Silencer" ;D I`ll put some pics up later ;D

Good job really as the Mini sets off car alarms with the exhaust Last I heard it was supposed to be the discretion of the MOT tester but again how true that is I aren't sure. I do have fears of turning up to some awkward tester and the guy saying "Oh that wont pass with that boyracer exhaust mate, haw haw haw"

I thought you'd fail and MOT on an incomplete system.
Argument could be, that it's not "complete" as it's about 2 foot too small!

Well duh I wouldn't leave in tears and go rip my exhaust off would I. I'd go to another tester, it would just be an unfortunate waste of time.
