Thought i might as well make a kind of build thread for this just to track my progress with it etc. Lots will be copied form other forums etc. so sorry if it doesn't all piece together properly! Also sorry for bad quality iphone pics! So i won the auction for a Peugeot racer for a total of about £35 on ebay. After a bit of arguing with the seller it turned up in, well, a state. Did some bits and bobs to it such as bending the rear dropout back and making it single speed Then the rear wheel came loose when riding, fixed it, then something snapped in the rear hub, and i have it on video kinda.. (watch in HD ) So i thought this would be a good time to strip it all down and get it painted. Big problem.. seized stem inside the forks. Tried everything i could think of, even filling it with a mixture of petrol, thick bleach and white spirit, nothing would free it up. Also i couldnt one of the cups out from my bottom bracket So i decided to saw the stem off. Now I'm left with some forks with half a stem stuck inside them, and no stem. Also managed to get the BB cup out by locking it in a vice. And started the stripping... Nipped to Halfords to get some paint, decided to get some new bearings for my bottom bracket while i was there. Cost me like £30 in total! Decided to saw my stem off... Eventually.. Finally got the chain side bottom bracket cup off by locking it in a vice and turning the frame Gave the bike a wash down and wipe down, not sure if these have been on the bike all the time but they're damn shiny compared to the rest of it! (don't know whats up with this picture, but its shiny haha) Hanging ready for Nitromors attack Looking messy Stripped some paint to find some bright spark had painted over stickers.. does that say Apollo?! Got the bulk off But its wrapped in like large coloured stickers, probably from how it was originally, but because theyve been painted over they're really hard to remove, ive tried using a hair dryer Random heart emblem on the underside of the frame, any ideas? Dramatic looking crappy quality thing... How it stands after lots of nitromorsing, hand and arm burning, scraping and aggravation. Cleaned bottom bracket Chipped threads, should hopefully be okay That's all for now folks, bought a flip flop wheelset for it, just cant wait to get it all painted up.

looks like a cool project..
I'm still having the same trouble with a stem i have , Stuck in the forks of an old french autocycle.
That heart on the frame reminds me of somthing though...
Colnago?
Are you sure its a peugeot? The lugs don't look very peugeot like to me...
If you can find LAE on here. He knows his older road bikes quite well. He might be more help.

I'm not sure what it is mate it was advertised as a Peugeot on ebay but when it arrived it looked kinda stolen :/
Also looks to have 'apollo' stickers under the paint

Late 70's Peugeots had similar lugs to that, but I don't think any of them had bare chrome forks. Pretty sure they were all painted half way with just the bottoms left in chrome. The M shape on the lug at the top of the fork is also not deep enough to be a Peugeot. That said, the head set and stem are the same as the one on mine and everything else looks the same: You can still get the stub of the stem out. You'll have to heat the fork tube up and melt the aluminium.

It seems a mix of parts. Is that 26 X 1 1/4 steel wheels on pressed steel hubs. All steel cranks. Strumley Archer chrome steel rear brake. Alloy mtb V brake lever. SR Custom aero stem. Falcon rear mech. I built this bike 20 years ago. It was a Vindec 3 speed roadster. I widened the rear drop outs to take a 5 speed wheel. I bought a pair of 700c chrome steel wheels. Weinmmann 605 brakes. SR alloy cranks with 36 and 52 rings. I bought chrome forks from Halfords. They look the same as your forks. A man in the bike club I was in, had a Peugeot Mount Cenis. It was red with chrome forks. So I copied the colour scheme. I don't have that bike any more. I'll have to start selling my bikes. If you paid £35 for that bike. I suppose thats with the postage. I was gonna try adverts on Gumtree or in local papers. about £20 a bike. For fully working, smart looking MTBs.

Loving the yellow pug looks really smart! And alec were you naming the parts on my bike? And yeah £35 with postage, it looked a lot better in the picture trust me, gave plenty of negative feedback, especially because he tried to charge me more than double what the agreed postage was. I guess he wasn't happy on what the auction ended on. To be honest it wouldn't surprise me if it was stolen, very shabby paint job and more than likely not a peugeot. Nitromorsed some more today, after rubbing the sitckers with some petrol and wire wool. Didn't really budge till i absolutely lathered it in Nitromors then took a wire brush to it and a fair bit came off. I'm still left with quite a bit of silver paint on it though that doesn't want to budge, so i think tomorrow ill revert to ye olde faithfull sand paper. Then when ive got all the paint off and washed it down ill start chopping off unnecessary parts like cable holding things (forgot what they're called!). Also my dad came in when i was fiddling. ...with the bike of course. He tried to get the bit of stem out of the forks but couldn't. We thought about heating it but he said the blow torch weve got isnt big enough to heat it all up enough Some random pics from today, these show the lighter silver paint that's very stubborn. Also what's this gold/brass looking stuff in some of the welds? cheers

hopefully this all ends in a decent bike!
to get that stem out, i would put a pole down the forks and try hammering the bejesus out of it. that usually works. failing that drill it out, it will defo go that way!
have you tried filling it with vinegar? that melts corrosion pretty well ive found with crusty bike parts. brake fluid is also another good one

Yeah that looks very similar, however the back brake runs along the top of the top tube on mine, and there was no evidence of it having a gear shifter in that place, similar though! And ive tried whacking the part of the stem with a sledge hammer... think it needs drilling out somehow haha. Delivery this morning Won them for £66, £8 p&p off ebay. Raleigh Omega rims, with flip flop hub, 16t cog + lock ring. Will remove the stickers from them when it gets closer to the time of putting everything together Should have something else in the post tomorrow, and will be ordering a couple more goodies in a second

Cool project, love that bar tape. Wondering why you didn't melt the stem out of the fork steerer though? No chemicals or spirits will remove it, it's seized in there due to bi-metallic corrosion. Happens often with alloy parts inserted into steel frames with no grease or oil applied. Most good indy bike shops would put it upside-down on the stand, get the heat-gun on it for a little while and melt the stuck part out for you. BikeFix in London did the same with a seatpost on an old steel GT of mine. Ruins the paint, but that doesn't matter because you're stripping it anyway. Hope you can save the forks this way. Stems are more easily replaced

the only blow torch we have is pretty small and I'm not sure if it'd heat it up enough, can give it a try though. Havent made any progress on the frame past 2 days will try finish getting the paint off tomorrow

Yet another delivery! 40mm bars, 130mm stem, 16t freewheel! Very good prices on them all too. Bars and stem are Italian made, even the 'instructions' are written in Italian which I thought was cool as hell. As my bar tape is also Italian! Freewheel came with a little bit of grease on it which made me a tad suspicious Pictorz

Tbh I'd have been more suspicious if somebody thought it was wise to assemble a freewheel without using grease... Good luck with the build, you're clearly having fun shopping!

Some random pics from today, these show the lighter silver paint that's very stubborn. Also what's this gold/brass looking stuff in some of the welds? That's the brass which holds the joint together. Steel bike frames are traditionally brazed together, not welded.

I was very close to getting a car but then got laid off from work, so decided to spend my wages on this project instead
Got a great deal on the stem and bars though, £9.99 each!

Where were the bars from out of interest? I take it they're alloy. What width and are they 25.4mm diameter.
