I would firstly like to.state i know jack about saabs and volvos so i need help! I'm rebuilding a mk1 astra and was originally going to whip in a bike carb'd xe but am now wondering, why build an engine that Will produce about 180 bhp when i can just whip in a turbo lump that Will have a hundred more!
I don't want to go down the stereotypical route of a let as.they are fairly expensive (tight budget) but know saabs and volvos can handle.good power on standard internals. What i want to know is what engine is the best compromise of of power and.price. If i could buy a whole donor car for 500 quid then amazing! Ideally it would need to mate up.to a vauxhall gearbox as well with minimal effort.
So, thoughts? Dirty easy cheap power? But.from where!

Try and get hold of a B230FT. Go for a 940 - you can easily pick one up for around £500. But TBH any of the engines, 2.0 or 2.3 can be tuned far beyond those figures for not much money.

I reckon you're thinking of the 4 pot from a Saab 9000. My knowledge is poor.. But they come in 2.0 and 2.3 flavours. 2.0s apparently rev better but the 2.3 will make a bit more power. They are supposedly good for 400bhp on standard internals. Later ones (post '93ish) will bolt up to GM gearboxes. Please note the number of 'supposedly' and 'apparently' and 'ish' used in this post Mark: It's going in a Mk1 Astra so a redblock probably won't be much use since they are generally only used in RWD applications

Is the b230ft a 2.3? Assume it is from the engine code, also, do you know if it would mate up with a.gm box? Ta :-)

The B207R bolts up to the F23 and possibly the M32 6-speed as well. It has a lot in common with the 2.2 Z22SE Vauxhall engine.

what you need is a b204 /234 from a 94 on saab 900 as it will bolt straight onto your box , a mate of mine on mig web (astra nige )does a tidy loom adaptor to make wiring simple and with sensible mapping 250 reliable hp from the standard t25 turbo and injectors

I dunno how much space there is in an Astra Mk1, but people have squeezed the SAAB 2.5V6 into a Corsa....

Nah not feeling a v6, a bit heavy to be hanging over the front wheels of a fwd car. Good thoughts though :-)

I think the Volvo idea is epic, but with the lack of a FWD box and the fact the post 1994 Saab engines share the GM bellhousing pattern makes the Saab engine the best option for cheap powers! A friend of mine put a Saab B204L engine in a Astra van, was quite a lot of work mind, IIRC pity much all the engine mounts need changing or making and the wiring is a bit of a fiddle. Again I'm only going off what my mate said and what I saw of him doing the conversion. He bought a whole work taxed and tested Saab 9000 Turbo for ?300 with panel damage, drove it about to make sure the engine was good and then did the conversion when the MOT ran out. Having seen what engines sell for on eBay getting a whole car makes sense as you'll get all the ancillaries and wiring, plus you have a car to weigh in as well. Although my mate did say that the Saab engines are quite heavy, so I wouldn't discount the V6 engine. I had one in an Omega only a 2.5 but it still went quite well and made a nice sound. Well worth a look. I dunno how much space there is in an Astra Mk1, but people have squeezed the SAAB 2.5V6 into a Corsa.... The Saab V6 is the same as the Vauxhall one, GM basically just lifted it into whatever it liked..... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_54-Degree_V6_engine.....although I believe the 95 Griffin got a 3.0 GM lump (like the Omega) but with a single turbo. IIRC it was about 250bhp and was only fitted to auto boxes

Thanks for the info chaps. I'm don't fancy a.v6 tbh, its all about building my first turbo'd car so 4 pot.with a.big whizzy thing.bolted to it is the way to go for me! Does anyone know what a saab 9000 bhp is from standard?

Saab did a high and low pressure versions of both the 2.0 and 2.3 although internally they are the same just different maps and turbos.....
2.0L 150 hp - low output 2.0L 175 hp - high output
2.3L 170 hp - low output 2.3L 200 hp - high output 2.3L 225 hp - Aero version
.....IIRC the 2.0 don't have balanced shafts and the 2.3 do.

Theres a guy on mk2oc who put one into his mk2. You`ve got to cut the drivers side chassis leg right back to nothing to get the engine in. F20 gearbox wont last 2 minutes so you`ll need the f28 and make the mounts for that too.
