How much power would you want out of it? Close to 300bhp is easily achievable on the td04 with basically a decent 3" DP and remap! and a few guys have had around 270 out of the smaller t25! The blocks supposedly good for just over 500bhp (I'm not far off that now with mine and have had no problems with running more power & boost, most of the problems were with the smaller turbos, blown gearboxes mainly!!) Reason for asking is if you went for an Aero engine with the TD04 (b234r) the most you'll see here is around 310/315bhp before you need to upgrade the turbo...which is still pretty quick. But nothing compared to what can be achieved with a larger turbo and supporting mods, they can be made into a complete animal for not a lot of money....great fun!! If you want closer to or over 400bhp I'd go for a b204 and just stick a big turbo on there. Shouldn't cost a lot as there's loads of cars out there now going for peanuts, get one in decent enough condition and you'll make your money back breaking it for parts.
Mine's a 2.3 9000 Aero which has been fantastic but the next car (either 9-3 or another 9k) will definitely have a b204 out of a lpt for a more revy engine, plus the lpt might have had an easier life and not been ragged as much! Can be made just as quick as the 2.3 imo. A friend of mine has a b204 with similar power and there's nothing in it.
Take a look on uksaabs.co.uk as there's loads of info/help on there with a lot of vx guys doing these conversions now. Some really nice ones...Nige's Astra is lovely, its gonna be silly quick when its finished!! Also tons of reliable 300 bhp cars, a few 400+ and a couple into the 500's!! Worth reading through Vigge's 9-3 sleeper project thread which has an insane amount of power..I think its well over 700 now and maybe into the 800? Definitely worth a look on there for ideas/advice. Plus there's a couple of guys on there who can remap it for you with T5 Suite for a fraction of the price the pro tuners charge....nothing wrong with it, I've had around 7 or 8 now and all have been spot on. You can map it yourself if your confident enough to do it (my plan for 2012!!)

Forgot to add! The 9-5 3.0 v6 turbo engine (found in the 9-5 Griffin) don't bother with it, I had LOADS of problems with mine and that was basically standard with 200bhp, it sounded nice though with that v6 rasp, pretty quick car but was pants! Hard to tune for any decent power given its a 3.0!!! Weird turbo set up....And broke down...lots! wibblepoo!

Another vote for uksaabs.co.uk there are serveral vauxhalls with saab engines on the project section on there. There is also an mx5 with a saab engine but i think its been broken up now which was a shame.
Also there is loads of help on tuning the engines, you can remap the ecu very easily. And its easily the friendliest forum i have been on! Present company excepted of course!

I think you'll need a 900/9-3 to bolt up to your VX gearbox as the 9000 is a different shape but best confirm that with one of the guys that's done it. I had a GT28RS fitted to mine before this GT3076R and it was fantastic, plenty quick for everyday use (same pace as an e39 M5 so great fun!!) Was by far the best 'stage' of tune I've had the car, virtually no turbo lag then in comes in like a sledgehammer. We never really knew what the numbers were but they seem to get 350 ish bhp no problem and it definitely felt like 350!!...not cheap though as the turbo itself is around 8/900 quid plus new oil/water lines, flanges, gaskets etc etc so it all mounts up, the fitting parts & DP cost more than the actual turbo! A far cheaper option would be to get a TD04 converted into a Hybrid Turbo (Saabflight seem to be a popular choice here and I'm sure a few guys have used Turbo Technics with good results) but a lot have gone down the TD04-19t route and have had problems so definitely worth asking around before spending any cash. The Hybrid seems to give similar performance to the gt28rs but even better to drive and a few of the guys actually prefer this set up so it must be good! Plus its a bolt on upgrade so you save a few £££ there straight away! I think mine cost around £2,300 all in compared to around £8/900 for the hybrid!! You'll also need a 3"DP, bigger injectors (630 dekkas are popular and pretty cheap) but mine ran better with Green Giants tbh, 3 bar map sensor, Walbro or equivalent fuel pump, bigger IC (Chinese eBay cheapo one for £70/£80 works ok for me), and a T5 Suite remap off one of the guys on UKSaabs to suit. Then if it was a 9k were talking about...a spare gearbox!! Another turbo a friend of mine used was a T28bb which also gave similar performance to the gt28rs (nothing in it) plus I'm 99% sure it's also a bolt on fit so maybe a few £££ saved there.

Cheers dude, just had a look on that website and its gold dust! So much info! The fella that put one in a mk3 managed to use a saab box/driveshafts which is the preferred option so if i can find out what he did I'm onto a winner!
Ooooo i can already feel the power lol

Oh and here is a tip, the engine management on 9000 onwards turbo Saabs (Trionic cars) can sometimes be hardeware hacked to be reflashable and there is software to remap it. forum.ecuproject.com/forumdisplay.php?23-Trionic-5-Tuning so using the loom/ecu and mapping it yourself is "easy".

b204L engine ftw they are slighter smaller and if you get one out of a gm900 (which is very closely related to the cav and astra) the end pulleys are slightly thinner too. Its a tall engine, and i needed to chop the sub frame to get it mounted level due to the vectras low front end. I've just got a stage one map and it pulled 180bhp/220torque with only 0.5bar boost. Its great fun to drive, ive got it hooked to a f23 gearbox with quaife. On track the pull from 80-120 is just silly! the engine is slightly heavier than a na four pot, but lighter than a v6. No need for expensive omex or such like, the t5 software is free and make mapping it easy! The coil pack has knock detaction on each cylinder and the ecu is faster than most after market ones so worth keeping. I had a friend do most of the work including the wires, but theres allot of info out there and it was too hard to sort aparently. My missus has a omex powered z20let engine in her car and has cost quite a bit more to convert hers due to the ecu and as the saab engines cost less. in simple terms: buy a running gm900 strip engine and loom and ancillaries out strip and sell what evers left weigh in the shell job done

so, it looks like we've settled on a B204L Saab engine, which is a Low Pressure Turbo (as dictated by the ECU) at approx 150bhp as standard.
I've got a B205L in my 2002 Saab 9-5, not as good as a b204L because of sump sludge and oil starvation so try to get an earlier one if possible.
That said, here's an easy way to get more performance out of the 2 Litre engine.
Saab did a B205R which is basically a 2 Litre engine with the turbo from the 2.3 Aero engine and a map to suit. This put out approx 200bhp.
So, get yourself a B204L engine, a TD04 turbo from a 2.3 Aero, then get in touch with "saabnoob" on uksaabs forum and he'll do you a B204R map with a stage1 tune. This gave my (b205L) car approx 250bhp! With a decent 3" downpipe, I could stretch it to nearly 300bhp with a simple remap.
Hope this helps.

Apparently you can build the old 4 pot BF Volvo lump up to 500bhp for about 3 grand which is a shed load cheaper than something like a YB at the same power.
just upping the boost (about 50 quid) will see just over 200bhp.
the way I'm going to go now the car is staying, is to fit the 16v head using the timing belt parts from the penta marine engine, pockets machined into the pistons and a cutom manifold for the turbo, according to the experts its doable for 1500 quid and will make a reliable 300bhp.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
