There's a 1.6C 5 speed petrol on eBay - I'm tempted as a daily/winter/parts chaser. The auction listing says 32mpg round town, 40 mpg on a run. Is this a reasonable assessment of what it would do? Any other stuff I need to know about these before I go drop a bid?

I'd imagine the 1.6 is a bit under powered for a beast like this, therefore fuel economy would suffer......maybe.

The 1.6 is surprisingly good....my Mk1 Passat is a 1.6 and that will pull 35ish on a run ( they are very similar in terms of size and weight)
My dad had a mk2 1.8 passat a few years ago and treated it very badly indeed- the thing refused to die! even when the cam belt snapped, he just slung a new belt on and it carried on (non interference engine)
They make a ridiculously practical (if not attractive) daily and parts are plentiful and cheap from the usual suspects (GSF, Euro, etc)
If I were looking for a cheap, reliable daily, I'd be seriously considering this.....

The best idea that you have had so far for this!
I have just looked at this on the bay and am rather impressed! I think it would be an admirable Akku wagon!

So long as it doesn't attract a pile of scenetax enhanced bids and end at a zillion quid. I'm on it.

they are good,i bought one quite a few years a go now and it was rough then but the bloody thing refused to die and I gave it no end of abuse, the only thing it broke was an alternator belt and a rear shock ;D Be suprised if it does go for silly scene tax money, there was a b2 1600 diesel estate on a coupla weeks ago that didnt even get the 900quid bin Theres another one on there too with a 600quid bin, looks suspiciously like a santana to me tho.....or it might just be my eyes not liking the tiny pics.... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1986-VOLKSWAGEN-PASSAT-GL-GREEN-/150665024896?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item231455d580

Good call, though i'd be surprised at 40mpg...
I had a B3 estate for years one of the best car i ever had, did nigh on 100k with nothing more than brakes and servicing, and it had 200k on it when i was given it...
that was a 1.6 TD and it went really well and did 50mpg no matter how you drove it, my mrs got over 60mpg every time...

It's either this or a Peugeot 306 1.9tdi
The dizzler has the edge on economy but the passat has retro charm and classic insurance - and less to go wrong

I had a santana... Same basic thing but booted...
Mine was a 1800 4 pot... Went well enough but thats the smallest engine id have.. The 1600 sounds like itll be dog slow... The 1800 did ok on fuel. i Didnt notice any difference from driving my mk2 polo in that respect.
Parts arnt too expensive. Just go to your local GSF...
The only time it gets expensive is modifiying. They don't go low as easily as most dubs . And wheels are the common 4x100

I'm going to give it a wee punt. I'll bid low to compensate for mpg concerns lol. If I'm outbid, meh, pug TDi it is then.

It's either this or a Peugeot 306 1.9tdi The dizzler has the edge on economy but the passat has retro charm and classic insurance - and less to go wrong 306s are surprisingly robust, and well protected from rust as it goes. They're like anything really - find one that's been regularly serviced and looked after, and away you go. The only electrical problem I had with mine was when I swapped the head unit over to a single-shot CD player and the 5A stereo fuse blew, causing the needles to stick upright in the dashboard, the odometer to go out and the starter refuse to engage again after I pulled in. Despite the AA patrolman insisting that the fuel pump was controlled by an ECU (for the instruments maybe, the fuel pump.... no) I nicked a 10A from his tool box and swapped it. And it fired up again. That said, I did see a rather lovely s*ene style Passat estate at Uni today. I've started a Web magazine and I'm hoping to catch the owner to do a feature on it. I don't know my VW chassis codes though, is this a B2 or a B3?

Can give you opinions on both having owned 1 B2 Passat and 5 306's My Passat was a 1900 5-pot, got 20 mpg everywhere but sounded awesome and handled well for a big motor, no trouble either As for 306's, the 1.9 TD ones are awesome, 4 of mine were that engine. 45-50 mpg everywhere no matter how you drive, great handling, cheap to mod, and with a tweak of the fuelling and wastegate your looking at 120 bhp for the price of a boost gauge, plus if it's an early Bosch-pump car it'll run on neat veg oil Check for HG problems, smoke on boost, sagging beam axles and whining in 2nd gear. As for electrics, don't bother checking them. If they work, it's a bonus, but asume they won't....
