So here we go.......
A mk2 golf gti has appearedin dipton near where I live. It has been there for a couple of days and now has a police aware sticker on it. I went and had a look around tonight. It has a dent in the driver rear quarter and a scrape on the passenger rear quarter.
I would absolutely love to get a hold of it because I love mk2's and really want one for my next car.
So how do I go about finding out if I can have it? How do I go about collecing it etc etc. Maybe this should be made sticky once its had some posts as a future reference for everyone else.

well... i researched this one
official stance is apply for the logbook, then if the owner ok-s it then it legally becomes yours... of course this takes a couple of weeks and by then its a)gone - crushed b)gone - available with storage charges or c) torched
i had a hypothetical conversation with the local man in the council who said hypothetically if it was to disapear overnight then he would consider it case closed... and not pursue it! then i could get the logbook
this car was out of tax and NOT NICKED; i hpi-ed it
I would check very carefully it is not nicked outwise ur in deep sh1t if u take it!

yeah get it.... councils pay ££££ for car removal, if you wanna do it for free then they won't pursue it! however do make sure it's not stolen first otherwise you'll be handling stolen goods at best, or be done for stealing it in the first place at worst.
be quick though, cars round here last two days at most before becoming a mass of smashed glass and dented metal.

i would chase it up with police since they're already aware of it. surely you could offer to store it until someone does or doesnt claim it? i imagine everyone would win from that situation: police/council don't have to worry about an abandoned car, owner (if they claim it) doesnt have car smashed by scallywags and you have the chance of a new car or reward if it is claimed.
edit: maybe a dumb question, wouldnt it be a lot of hassle since i assume it doesnt have the keys with it?

slightly OT but theres a smashed vectra near me in a bad way the roof had to be cut off to get the passengers out its just been left there for the past 2 weeks.......can i have the engine
in a way i hope it gets left there to become overgrown in weeds and slowly rusts away for some retro rider to find when it becomes a little more retro......I'm suprised someone hasn't allready helped themselves to parts

Hmmm bit wary of hpi'ing it because it costs like £30! One of the door handles had been mangled and the drivers dor was unlocked but there was no ignition damage. Dodgy thing is its still taxed so it looks as if it might be stolen . I dunno what to do. The other problem is how do I get it home. Don't have a trailer/a-frame/car capable of towing. Maybe I'll just daydream about it and not actually get it:(

I thought long and hard about acquiring a dumped mk2 cavalier i saw on a quiet road last year. It looked to be in excellent nick, it had a notice on it saying if its not removed or claimed within 14 days it will be crushed. I didnt want to just take it as i thought id get in curse word so sadly it dissapeared, probabaly to the crusher. Such a shame coz mk2's have dissaperead of the face of the earth round here, just never see them any more bar one or 2 like every year. id love to have saved it.

Here in Lovely Brisbane,it's illegal to leave a car on the road without rego.I live in an industrial area ( cheap rent...) and one street away is a mile or two of car yards,so cars are abandoned here all the time when the owners come to buy a new car and trading in the old wreck isn't worth the hassle..Last year a 1968 Merc 280 without plates was parked on my corner so I phoned a mate to come and get it.....he was nearly arrested when the owner phoned the police to report his car stolen,he had been moving it to a workshop for repairs when he ran out of fuel. Moral of the story? ...always ask around if in doubt. i have seen the councils contrator pick up an abandoned Corrolla ( about a '74 model) with zero rust, nice paint and seats etc with a hiab and squash it to fit on the truck deck...I could have had the car up and running in a week it was that good.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

if you ring the dvla and chat up the operator they normally will tell u if its reported stolen if its not then send them a £5 telling them its blocking your drive and they will send u the last known address of the owner then contact them if they don't wanna know then apply for the v5

I remembered seeing this on the Used Car Roadshow and thought it may be of use to you guys, especially with the numbers of nicked retro cars nowadays, so, if you want to check a vehicle for being stolen/scrapped/OK, use the following; text CHECKUCR (space) [car registration no] to 88600 and they will text back its status. It costs £3 plus usual text fees but if it saves you or someone else a shedload of ching its worth it.

When I used to collect cars for ban*er racing anything with an expired 14 day notice was fair game, never got in trouble over it. I have never tried to get one back on the road though.
Best to ring up the council and see, also ask people in the area. Ive tried to collect "abandoned" cars only to find Skull crusher Henderson running out of his flat towards me with a rottweiler the second I moved the car.
It does sound asthough this car has been pinched and then dumped. Perhaps its best to forget you ever saw it.
