As some of you already know I am actively hunting for a cheap luxo barge to transport my bro around in. So far ive been looking at Volvo 240. ![](http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/NFS/speedhunters.com/Images/Mike%20Garrett/1%20Feb/imp/volvo1.jpg) Volvo 740/940 ![](http://www.modifiedcars.com/pix/cars_large/32027_182120.jpg) Merc W123 230E ![](http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/diji73/IMAGE_067.jpg) Merc 190 ![](http://www.hugh.co.uk/merc/000530-001.jpg) BMW 520 E28 ![](http://cdn7.wn.com/vp/i/f7/cc98b9abf1bb6b.jpg) Am I mad for liking the US spec bumpers? BMW 520 E34. ![](http://www.m5board.com/photopost/data/552/15864Vue_3_quart_arri_re_droit.JPG) Having run a few insurance qoutes I was very suprised and pleasantly I might add ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Merc 190 1.8 petrol gave a confuse the market . com qoute of £745 BMW 520s where both about £800 and the volvo 940 2.4 Diesel came out at £618. And I'm 21 ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) So of those options what would you choose and what can you tell me about them. Also what super cool cars am I missing. Paul p.s. budget is £1200 now or nearly 2k in 4 weeks time. Oh and what scope is their for cheap (wont murder my insurance) but cool mods on the above cars?

Lexus LS400 - insurance may be a killer though. They are truly fantastic though, although I am biased as I own one!

What bladerunner30 said, oh and by pure coincidence my dad's selling one... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) But in all seriousness, the two Mercs seem like the stars out of the ones you've looked at so far

+1 on the XJ6. Check the insurance on an XJ40 - it could be considerably less than you think and so much more car!

XJ6 and XJ40 seem to be of a muchness insurance wise. £1140 a year if I could get that cheaper by using classic insurance that would be achievable

E28 will rot too much for you. They need looking after. E34 doesn't have the rear headroom or legroom for your brother.
Rear room in Volvos is more ample.

Toyota Camry? Supposedly hugely competent motors. Decent fun in sport and V6 guises aswell. I think theres a chap on autoshite flogging a late 90's 4pot Sport for well under a bag. ![](http://images.automotive.com/reviews/images/96camry.jpg) +1 for a Legend though, I always thought they were lots of car for the money. Just about every toy going, lots of dead cow, and IIRC the 24v V6 is a gem of an engine. ![](http://honda4ever.com/assets/images/db_images/db_honda_legend_1996_21.jpg)

Find an old limo? Granada V6 limo with loads of room in the back? Slam it on some big merc monoblocs (the ones like giant granada cossie wheels), swap in a cossie 24v and some tinting at the back?
Or for slightly more pimp factor a limo merc. There used to be a 123 limo in black owned by a fancy bar near me and it was very cool.

Forget the 190E, they are too small in the back.
Hmmm, how about a Rover SD1 or 800 series?

Also surprisingly small in the back - I'm comfy at 6', but any taller would be a squeeze.

Not a lot of room in a 190e really - I've spent most of this evening stripping the loom out of mine and seem to have crippled my spine.. Awesome motors tho, one of it's bigger brothers are certainly worth a look ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Merc W126 is nice, but then I am biased too. All over 20 years old so eligible for classic car insurance...

I wouldn't categorise the 240 or the 190 as luxo-barges. To me, the phrase 'luxo-barge' represents large, well-equipped cars whose depreciation, once epic, has now plateaued, leading to posh-ish cars at knock-down prices; e.g. the Alfa 166, Renault Vel Satis, Citroën C5, Ford Scorpio, Lexus LS400, Renault Safrane, Citroën XM etc. But that's just me.
