Hiya, I've got a 2000 plate Golf GTi 1.8 turbo (AUM engine code) and it's just had the cambelt and headgasket done on it, just got to try and start it today and when the battery is connected the fans come on straight away without any keys in the ignition and then when you try and start it nothing happens, I.e no lights on the dash, no cranking or anything...I'm stumped?! Does anyone have any ideas? Cars been off the road for a few months now I'm getting desperate!! Ellie  |

Make sure all your plugs are connected, especially the at the ecu.

Just done as in this is the first time you've attempted to start it ? if so check there water in it and the earths are back on with bnon left hangine, same with the starter lives.

Make sure all your electrical connectors are connected and in the right place. It definatly sounds like a wiring fault

It was the first attempt at starting, checked the water and released the pressure through the system. Had to leave it and go to work but am hoping to find the problem before work tomorrow otherwise its on the bike (cycling) again!

Ok don't take this the wrong way but you have connected the terminals on the battery properly. Have you conected the earth on the engine?

a common problem (ive seen it more than once on this age of VW) is people getting the main battery lead, the starter lead, and the gearbox earth strap mixed up, with varying results. the symptoms you describe are one possible result though.
I'm not sure if youd have undone them to do the HG and cambelt though, depends how you did it, its more common after clutch replacements.

Finally got round to checking the connections, earth connections are ok, battery is connected up correctly, still the same result.
Checked all the fuses they're all in tact, I'm lost!!

found this, is the fuse on the far left the culprit? 110A with the black wire leading in>  |

That looks very, very likely to me. Make double sure all your leads are on right then change the fuse.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in |

Awesome, that was the culprit, however now its trying to start but sounds like this:
I checked theres fuel up in the injector rail looks all good, now I'm lost again!!!

ive only got bad news for you mate that motor has no compresion.
so the timings out[and hopfully no piston to valve contact]
or youve got some bent valves in there me old fruit

if it was the cam belt that snapped initially then most likely bent valves I'm affriad! my dads 406 belt snapped and bent about 12 valves

I had all the valves replaced, the head skimmed and pressure tested and new gaskets used when it was all put back together, is there anything else that could be causing it, could the timing be out? Also someone suggested the tensioner sounded too tight?

That would suck massively!!! |

Sounds silly, but did you check the cam timing? If so, was it with tippex marks or with the timing pins? Another thing, did the crank pulley have a rubber layer in the middle circumference (basically, was it a harmonic balancer type?). You did turn the engine over by hand a few times (with the covers off) before trying to fire it up right? Sorry for the obvious questions, but you never know  . I notice that you say that changed the 'belt'. AFAIK, don't these 1.8Ts come with two timing belts (one to drive the inlet cam and the main belt only driving the exhaust cam and water pump from the crank pulley). If so, did you change that one too? |

Annoyingly I actually paid someone else to put the cambelt on to avoid messing up the timing etc, so I can't answer those questions  , the belt that came off though had sheered off half the teeth as opposed to snapping completely could this send off the timing? |

if the valves have been done, I'm gonna have a stab in the dark and say that the cams arent timed up properly on the timing chain side of things  double check the crank and camshaft marks are lined up with the correct timing marks on the covers (vw use the same covers for a few engines with different timing marks  ) think on the timing chain end of the camshafts are each marked with a spot that needs to be lined up on each one so they are facing/nearest each other ;D |

any joy on this? where abouts are you? if your near sheffield i'll come take a look. done more than a few a3 tt cambelts head rebuilds in my time at work.
