Was browsing ebay (as you do) and seen that K,L and M plate Impreza's are hovering around the £2k to £3k mark... Even seen one on buy it now for £2500 with 340 bhp... Do these make good used buys or am I staring down the barrel of a engine that's about to grenade and a car that's been thrashed to within an inch of it's life... And the most pertinent question......Is it Retro Enough?

My father in laws is in the readers rides section. Can't touch the "bangs for bucks" BUT can be v expensive if it all goes tits up! Crucial to have it checked over by an expert

Cheap Subbies are generally cheap for a reason, boxer engines in cramped bays aren't the easiest to work on and therefore labour costs can be pretty astronomical, if you can or do all your engine work yourself, wouldn't be a bad idea, though on the early Impretzels the gearboxes and diffs aren't the strongest.

I remeber when the carlton gsi was the choice of ram raiders. Love the scoobies for what they are but feel they are more use as doner cars than users....... Anyone for a 350bhp fwd Mk1 astra? ?

Like all obvious fast J cars, i'd tread very carefully, thats why i'd be tempted to find a family one owner etc or take an expert. As CR500Dom mentioned check insurance too. the dodgy chavs who 'own' these have not helped with premiums that would of started quite high. Retro? only very early ones, still a lot of em about really, so not specially retro yet.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

VERY BAD IMAGE PROBLEM ALERT!!!
Round here they are driven almost exclusively by sh1t-thick thugs. Well within the benefit-fraudsters reach now, so will take a few years to get over that.... sad cos they are a h00t to drive.

Talking of Imprezas, saw one of these today: I wish my car said GRAVEL EXPRESS on the back.

sadly the chain of car ownership round here goes Nova-Nova-Nova-Corsa-Fiananced Impreza. They're all either WRX's, or 2-litre povo ones with WRX stickers on too. On principal i will never own one till they're £150 out of the free ads.

Have to agree with all coments especially Pillock's "Nova-Nova-Nova-Corsa-Fiananced Impreza. " statement and pogweasel's "Round here they are driven almost exclusively by sh1t-thick thugs. ". Both those statements apply to my neck of the woods as well! I have concidered buying one myself but it's the 'image' problem at present, I know you should not go on what people think but in this case I think the 'atmosphere' around and about them is just wrong ...perhaps in a few years time when all the chavs have moved onto something else If you are thinking of a car like this what about a R32 onwards skyline, these seem to have become cheeper of late ...then again probably been knackered up by some Nut-Tah aswell

Probably not what you'd be looking for though.
There's a link to pics in the adverts section of the board.

Buy one, tune it, stick the non-turbo bits on and keep the 15" alloys with some decent tyres. Then go make all the local thugs/chavs think there's something seriously wrong with theirs.

The ones with gold wheels are designed to match elizabeth duke jewelry from Argos Sadly a great car which is currently starting to be owned by the wrong sort of owner. Kinda like Capris were 10, 15 years ago when some of my mates used to hate to ride in mine because of the image issues that came with them. You either care what other people think about your car or you don't. I don't much. So long as you get one thats not been too abused you should be OK. I'd guess a cheap one will cost you more in the long run though...
