I like many people in my age group was suffering from a low level of awesomeness. My once lithe physique had given way to the advancing years, The hair on my temples had turned to grey without the benefit of looking sophisticated and after years of driving MK1 VW's and BMW E30's they lost their spark. I needed to do something stupid, something totally not practical, something awesome. Daily driving a turbo'ed Fiat fills that niche. I am indeed more awesome now All joking aside I am far more outgoing and confident with people because of this silly car. A simple trip to the shops involves no less than 6 people stopping me to ask about it and tell me how much they love it. Even panhandlers on the street lower their signs to give me a big thumbs up as I drive by.

Some interesting answers here, it does seem a bit like a barrage of 'cos I like it' though, but when I come to answer I seem to be lacking the knowledge to say anything else In truth I decided a long time ago (due to financial constraints) that you could buy a car for any purpose for sub 2K. Strangely this still seems to be the case, especially when you look at how much other things in life have increased in price by. Now I have a bit more money to play with I still see little point in paying more, so I buy more cars. In short, my cars make me smile for lots of reasons from driver involvement to the way they look. That's enough justification for me, I have no desire to 'be different' or proclaim I'm mis-understood by the masses. I like moderns as much as I do retros, I just don't see the point in paying 20K for one car when I can buy ten ;D

Because for 15 minutes on the way to/from work, I'm a middle-management executive from the early 1980s, which is pretty much where my aspirations stop.

2010 Seat Ibiza 1.6 Sport - reliable daily runabout that handles well, is nippy enough for my combined commute and I can literally leave it anywhere and it sort of blends in, hence I don't have to worry so much about it.
1984 'B' Mercedes 190E - Have had a soft spot for these since I saw one on holiday as a kid in the late 90's - this particular one cropped up on eBay, ticked the boxes and was something random to buy (I wasn't even looking for a Merc, I wanted an E28 BMW!!) - I just had to have it! It looks pretty cool too and always draws attention with the Zender bodykit, big badge front grill, lowered suspension etc and the fact its virtually immaculate for its age.

Because i wanted a fun little go-kart that makes me smile every journey. This little pocket rocket can do everything i need, it has 5 seats or can carry the bikes, yet it's as light as a Lotus Elise. And goes like one, but sounds better. And drinks even less fuel, so i can use it all the time. Which is the point in it being 'my car'.
It was gonna be a MK1/2 Fiesta or Nova, but the '80s Polo feels far better built. And that was a factor when putting a relatively powerful engine in a tiny car.
I've built it to be perfect for me, tuned all the controls so it feels and drives just how i like it to. Having owned various XR's i found VW in the shape of a Scirocco and didn't know what'd taken me so long - I wanted a MK1 Golf GTi but this is far faster, more fun, now has the handling, is more economical, and whilst i don't really care what others think of it, i like the way most people don't know what it is.

I drive the 780 because I like cars that are genuinely good at what they do, but aren't recognized. I wanted a Volvo, but was being tempted by big Merc and BMW coupes, and although the stock turn of speed is borderline dangerously slow for a big GT, the turbo swap i have planned for it will fix that. In short, its been dead reliable, grips like crazy now that it has good tires, and is a very comfortable late 80's GT.

ive had the car for 18 years, kinda like one of the family now. did try giving it away many years ago and no one wanted it.....not even for free. now its worth just a little bit more than "free" and ill be driving it for as many years as possible to come. i always wanted one, saved up and bought one for £800 and the rest is history. still got it,still looks ok,kids love it and all my mates have the same type of car. always got a friend to help if its bust and we all work like a family keeping each others cars on the road and also we set up an owners club to help others too.. its what having older cars is all about. woulda had a bluebird saloon though if one had got there first, still like them even now..........................
