Some surprising figures I came across today: 66% of drivers in developing Asia consider a powerful engine to be a very important factor in choosing a new car; in the US it's just 29%. So, why did you choose your car? Power, looks, driveability, kudos, lifelong aspiration, or just honest-to-goodness overall cost?

I started out on Skoda - the antithesis of Reputation importance! Your lifelong aspiration would explain all of those. Then the BMWs came, a mix of power, driveability, reputation and believe or not, cost. Current Alfa actually ticks all of the boxes, but was bought on the criteria of 1) feels special 2) spacious for work and 3) fun to drive (what 7k redline V6 wouldn't be)
Seems I don't fit the demographic of any of the surveyed drivers above. Probably most of us wont! Hmm, maybe worth a poll.

I drive a mk2 ford orion daily, purely because I needed a car and fancied it, don't really fally into any of those categories as its slow, boring, noisy, cheap but is good on fuel.

Cost, primarily, and then guilt for not doing anything with what was actually a pretty good if basic little car. Finally, respect for the car itself and the practicality of cost again when I discovered that to get to where I want will cost less than starting again with something I'd go out to buy from my Want List.

For about a decade, my decision-making process for buying cars went like this: - Is it fast? - Does it look cool? - Can I afford it? The fact that I prioritised it in that order meant that a) I owned a lot of reasonably rapid cars and b) I'm in a sh!tload of debt! But hey ho.
Recent times (and marriage) have shifted the list thitherwards: - Can we afford it? - Is it reliable? - Will it be cheap to fix when it inevitably breaks?
So... some development to do there. I spend half my life on this forum, yet my current daily driver was built in 2002. Sorry. I'll try to do something about it!

All that tells me is that North Americans don't like rating things as "very important" as much as people in developing Asia.
I own grey porridge for the prestige.

The noise, the smell and the involvement. And I like the way it looks. This, really. I drive the Trans Am because it makes kids shout and point and old people go "tut tut". It can scare the curse word out of me, run 14.6 on curse word tyres and makes women think I am hot and macho. It will do 22 mpg on a run. All round excellent daily. I drove the Caddy because I love the whole "driving a long in your living room" experience. I buy cars that do something for me. I'd hate to buy them for any utilitarian reason.

Depends really, but i suppose my only real criteria is driver satisfaction, i cant abide cars that that do'nt make me feel something.
I've found the only answer for me is to have at least three cars on the road, a toy (the 911) a daily (modern golf Tdi) and a workhorse/van/4x4 (currently the LWB TD Frontera) the as an extra I have the P5b as a project...plus t' missus has a large new familly estate so that's all the bases covered..
The 911 is by far my favorite car ever, the looks the noise the smell the power, the feeling i get everytime it sweeps towards the redline are magical, i just adore it, coupled with that, it's great on fuel when not being caned, has usable 4 seats a decent boot and feels like it's hewn from granite.... The VW golf is by far and away the easiest to live with car I have ever owned, it's nippy, hugely frugal, almost ridiculously practical, safe, reliable, full of toys and fun enough to throw round the twisties for day to day use, i cant imagine a better all rounder .. The Frontera is great for what it is, reliable tough great off road and far towing and most importantly huge in the back, i do have a Land Rover fetish so i may swap it for a Disco or similar soon even though it's a massive step backwards... perverse aint I...

I drive my mk3 Golf because I'm saving for a decent motor and I wanted something cheap and reliable to run around in while I do...

I drive my Mk1 Granada because I think I'm in The Sweeney...!
I drive my Toledo because it's cheaper to run than the Granada but I love it just as much...
I suppose I do it because I love old cars, that's why I drive what I drive...

I always wanted one when I was a kid. I've kept it this long because it's quirky and pretty quick too. Shocked faces never get old.
