Ever had it where you are all geared up to buy, swap or be given a car but for some reason, it never materialises? Over the past week I have been talking to a chap selling a non running L400 delica, to the point where this evening I went to meet him and pay for the car, with the transport happening tomorrow. Unfortunately some complete and utter weapons grade curse word has stolen my bank details and spunked all my money on phone topups, clothes and the racing post. I now will not be getting my new delica, which only leaves me to consider what might have been. Please share your near miss stories so I know I'm not alone.

This was probably about 6 years ago now. Went to look at a really clean MG Metro Turbo up for a grand, saw it in the freeads on a Saturday phoned up and went to look at it the same day. The bank was closed and the most I could get out of the cash machine was £250, so I went to Minehead with my £250. Basically I wanted it the guys said he wouldn't take a deposit cause he wanted it gone and wouldn't hold it (what a prick!), the soonest I could return was a few days later it sold to someone else

I passed my test afew weeks after my 17th birthday and i`d saved afair bit of cash up.Still wasent `into` a make or model of car, just wanted something cool.So on the way home from college bus goes through a small village and there at the side of the road was sat a silver firenza estate.I was in love and jumped straight of the bus and went to look at it.Had a long chat with the owner and made plans to pick it up the next day. Took the day off work the following day.Got money from bank.Jumped on bus and was nearly wetting myself as the bus pulled into the village,to see the car just driving off his driveway and down the road.Old owner waving it away. To say i was gutted doesent even come close. All my dreams of getting Tanya Gibson in the back of it for a game of hide the sausage gone in a blink of an eye. But the week after i spotted and bought my first mk1 astra and thats led to the mk1 estate ive got now 17 years laters.

oh yeah Ive had that before but with bikes. Had my eye on a perfect project bike. agreed Id have it (without even looking at it because it was so cheap) and said Id be over to pick it up tomorrow and would pay full price. sent the guy a message asking when to pick it up, his reply "oh ive given it to my mate for nothing". To say I was peed off was an understatement as Id been looking for that specific bike in my price range for about 2 years

Another one for me to add here then is the time I got given a Mk1 astra coupe, but was too young and stupid to realise what I had, as I never got the logbook I disposed of it by leaving it in the nearest pub carpark, it was gone within the hour, I think that is 10 years ago now and I still kick myself for it today!

Mine was a lovely little metallic blue 1985 Polo coupe (1.3 SR is that right?), which was sold for £50. Ran lovely too Actually i think it might have been a 1.3 GT, which makes that poor decision to sell even worse (can i add - fsh and 63000 miles)

Rover P6 2000SC that was on e-bay last year, white, bit tatty in the paint department, MOT'd. I was watching it when it first went up at £950 and watched the price drop all the way down to £350. Unfortunately for me, the company I worked for had an annoying habit of not paying its staff in proper amounts, so I had no chance of going to get it.

Funny i was thinking about this the other day.
Back in the 90's there was a garage owner selling up, he had a Datsun 240Z, yellow with mint slot mags, been working on it a while, new floors, sills, wings, etc, was running/driving just needed painted and assembled, guy who owned the car was sent to prison for a long time, he told the garage owner to sell it and try and get what it owed him in labour and parts, he wanted £1000 for it, was living with my parents at the time, had a running Mini and a Mini shell i'd just bought, they'd have went mental if i sugested another car.
With the money decent ones are going for now that was probably my only chance of owning a 240Z.
Around 2000 i was offered a 1970 Mustang Mach1 Shaker for £1500, did'nt let that one get away ;D

Was offered a 4 door Mk1 Escort for £400 not too many years ago by a friends neighbour, slightly lowered and wide rostyles. Couldn't really be arsed to sort the money out and no desire to own a Ford..... Might have been a good investment looking back at it. Also put a deposit on a 2300 Vauxhall Victor, gold one, in a garage in Poole on the condition he would do the very minor weldong and MOT it and I'd pop back and pay the balance, wanderd down a couple of weeks later as I thought it was dragging on a bit and the place had shut down, it's now a block of flats I believe. Very disappointed. Turned down a 1979 Datsun 120Y 2 door saloon for peanuts. Nuts. Did manage to get a Saab 900 Ruby for £100. Sold for £3750......... They didn't all get away.

Missed or lost s few over the years, about 10/11 years ago where i lived an old boy had a 2 door mk1 escort in his garage, i drove past daily and kept seeing it for a couple of years, i kept meaning to stop a ask about it, then 1 day i drove past just as the scrap mans hiab had just loaded it on his truck, gutted. Same as above but a few months ago and a 89 polo 2 door salloon old dear owned and propper rat look, faded paint scabby arches ect. And about 8 years ago i was told about a mk1 capri in a garden, so i went for a look, 1.3 base model, rear window smashed but no carpet so no major rot, it needed front pannel and some inner wing repairs, but again nothing major, i offered a ridiculous price of something like £30, (scrap was about £11 a ton then) guy said i'll have to see my brother as its his car, i got a call saying i could have it for £50 and i never went for it.

I had several generous offers from RR'ers here that I'd like to thank again, even my dad offered to help me out (he hates cars, especially ones that are already broken!) but unfortunately it was never to be and evilbay whisked it well out of my grasp, but at least I can draw a line under it now.

I was offered a MK2 Lotus Cortina Crayford convertable a few years back. Tax'd & MOT'd for not a lot of money, but I was young & foolish & thought 'what do I want with an old car like that, hasn't even got a proper roof...' I'm still seething about that now

I found a Capri 1600 LS with a fresh MOT, totally standard and pretty sound with some slight bubbling on the wings when I was looking for a first car back in 2004 for £575 at a back street dealer in Bradford, but couldn't insure it. With what Capris go for now, I wish I'd bought it and stored it

i was thinking of starting a similair thread as it has happened a few times over the years but my latest ones was 2 months ago heres the story :
popped into see my mum ( the house that i grew up in ) & on my way home drove past my mates parents house (again they have lived in the same house all my life) 400yrds away from my mums . the house opposite theres had sold & was being renovated it had a drive down the side & a garage at the end & i remember an oldish couple living there when i was growing up & remember seeing the car there (will tell you what it was at the end !!!! ) . so this is a friday tea time i stop my van & knock on the door no answer place is like a building site so i have a quick look around the car (building it up in my mind ) . so i come home write a note go back & post my details through the door & come back home & try to work out how to pay for it ,where to put it & HOW TO TELL THE WIFE !!!! so friday i worked out £500 should own it & worked out what i was going to sell & thought i'll drive passed on sataday dinner time when i drop the wife off at our mates. 1pm sataday drive past the car has gone !!! I'm gutted so the wednesday after ive pooped round to my mums again & on the way home i see the buiders there & it turns out its the guy that has bought the house so i tell him it was me that dropped the note in & got chatting to him & asked him what had happened to it . this is where a grown man nearly cried !!! he told me that he had moved it out of the garage to put the cement , plaster & building equipment in the garage so left it on the drive & said someone asked about but nothing happened so he phoned a place to come & move it . he said they should have picked it up on the wednesday before but didnt get there till 11 am sataday morning !!! then he told me he GAVE them the car & the spares out of the garage & they WEIGHED IT IN for £140 & gave him the certificate !!!! then said if i wanted it i should have taken it as it was in the way !!!! now for the car
it was a mk1 escort 4door L reg (tax exempt) with loads of 70's accessories on it lamps, louvers on the rear screen ,headrests plus spare wide wheels ) it had a knock on the front & some rust & was covered in dust but was in good shape & the paint was that yellow/greeny colour & had been sat in the garage since 1985 !!! i came home & the wife asked me what was wrong as she thought something had happened to my mum !!! i told her what had happened & she laughed i was wounded over a car !!!!
then to make it worse i went to see my brother a few weeks later & was telling him about it & my nephew who works at a breakers yard pipes up "we had a mk2 escort van in work last week" i ask why didnt you phone me he said i had only asked him to ring me if they get any mk3/4 escorts in !!! then tells me it had a bit of rust on it & a guy bought it for £170 & DROVE OFF in it . it was a bad few weeks for me

Mazda 1300 two door (FA3ts - so a widebody) in a rare blue with a white interior. Rare does not even begin to describe how hard it is to find a non white Mazda 1300. Friend found it in a wrecking yard for sale as a runner, was a bit hazy on telling me where it was as he wanted a finders fee. In the end agrees to take me to see it. It had been crushed the day before.
