Ok due to change of circumstances I need a new car.
Long story cut short my brother is severly disabled and untill now lived in a care home. Unfortunatly the home went bankrupt 2 weeks ago and threw all their clients out with 36hrs notice. Now he is living with us and it looks to be permanent. He is 6 foot 6 and finds it very difficult to fit in the back of one of my cars which unfortunatly is sometimes a nesscesity. So as a result I am selling up my fleet. I want to replace both cars with one that is bigger and more suitable.
should I stay with retros or go modern?
Could you please give me suggestions of something that will fit the bill. It needs to be reasonably economical i.e. more 25mpg. Decent size boot Good rear leg and head room. Insurable for a 21 year old to drive. My budget is going to be about £1300 which I know is tight so I plead to the collective knowledge of RR for suggestions.

Sorry to hear that - hope it's not too difficult.
I can see why you might need to transport him on occasion, but can I ask why he can't sit in the front? Or do you have more than one 6'6" person to transport at the same time?
Otherwise, I'd be looking at small-engined (up to ~1500cc) retros that can go on a classic policy - you are only 21, and (presumably, due to classic insurance policies) have 0 NCB, so insuring a modern car will be expensive.
Nothing springs to mind at present, but I will have a think.

Ahh the reason he cant always sit in the front is I transport my Parents as well. My father is in a wheelchair and has to be lifted in and out of the car also my mother has very bad arthritis in her neck and back and finds it almost impossible to sit in the back of a car

If you want to stay retro/classic, have you tried Rover 2000/2200 or Triumph 2000/2500? Should get near to 30MPG, cheap to insure as very few young people drive them, reasonable access & legroom to front and rear, and should be achievable with your budget. I insured my V8 P6 (with engine and gearbox mods) for around £500, fully comp, at the age of 21.

Sorry to hear that buddy, i am thinking outside the box a little and although not massively retro, think that give a couple of years they will be huge, a fiat multipla, jtd, can be had cheap enough ask emdee, they sit 3 and 3, so plenty of room and has a largish boot, or you could pick up a late 90's citroen xsara picasso, i personally have a 56 plate one (and before that had a diesel on a x plate) and can't fault it, good driving postion, plenty of room in the back, 5 individual seats, and a largish boot too, i can get get 2 single buggies and a double buggy in ours and still have some space, can be had for very little money now, i didn't get on too well with the hdi i had alot go wrong with it in the time we owned it, but the petrol 1.6 is very good easily returns 34mpg, on a run i normally get around the 40mpg mark

An oddball Personally, I like the looks of the streamline Transit. They drive very nice as well and space is plentyfull. don't know what the insurance would be like. I'm also looking for a other car and without NCB. Sofar I figured out that a Peugeot 306 diesel turbo (or probably a similiar Golf type car) would be the largest/ cheapest car to run for me.

Rover 2000/2200 has almost comedy value lack or rear seat space. I've ridden in back of one a few times, I'm 5'11" and there was little leg room and my head was about on the ceiling.
Some form of Mercedes. W123 or W124? The W124 petrol cars should make the MPG you want, plus have capacious rear seats and are popular as taxis when new.
A modern will give you better MPG. I had a '93 Mazda 626 which was like a barn inside and did 38 - 40 MPG realistic.

skoda felicia cube with disabled conversion would be a possible option. cheap, retroish, loads of space, versatile. only downside is that it only has 2 front seats, as its essentially a van. The 1.9 derv is great on fuel 45-50mpg looks a bit like a pope carrier though

My main suggestions have already been covered; the Fiat Multipla, and a Skoda Favorit/Felicia. I would definitely search for something with some height in it. It's a pity that Hillman Huskys were three-door. I can't think of much retro that would suit, perhaps an E30 318 Estate, or the Counts Lada.

Another vote for the Multipla. I'm 6'3 and fit fairly comfortably in the front or back. It's also probably "weird" enough to keep a Daf fan happy ;D

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Dad isn't in an electric wheelchair. We wheel his chair up to the passenger door and help him up and into the car then the chair folds up and goes in the boot hence the need for a decent size.
Big trummy sound good if I can find one within budget. Was thinking an 1850 dolomite but am not sure what the rear space is like in them.

Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD not very retro but suits your needs, plus it's a BMW engine too. Edit: .....or a 525td E34 same engine just as good, some will argue it's better

Ah yes, that is a good point. I'm only 5'10" so I forgot about the headroom... never had too much of a problem with legroom, even when I used it for a wedding with a bride (big dress) in the rear seat.

I'm 6'7" and have a bad back and theres a very limited selection of "car shaped" cars that are comfy in the back and don't require you to squich up, big mercs and volvos being two of them, personally i would be looking at a more modern people carrier, they may not be as cool, but with two large people who need space its probably the best solution, large rear doors will alos make things easier.
Most retros big enough to offer the room you need wont meet your MPG requirements, if you really want a retro and you can get past the MPG issues there are LWB versions around of most old luxo barges, they may be factory options or conversions.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
