This is my first Imp, you might remember it being advertised on here a few weeks ago. I thought i'd better start a thread on him! Right, BAM. I saw Frank had advertised him on here, and i wanted it strait away. The problem was my MGB still wasn't sold, so i had to hope it was still there when i had the cash. It was, so i contacted everyone involved.. Unfortunately Frank had sold BAM that very night on ebay. I was gutted. Luckily (for me) the sale fell through, and i secured the car. The next week was spent running around getting wheels sorted, a trip to Daventry sorted that out and we were ready to go. I took some pictures of the journey so i'll stop talking and post those instead. This is me and my Girlfriend Melody, at 6.30am, just about to set off on the 320mile round trip This was my everyday car (now sold) it only cost £80 in petrol to do the trip! And these are the wheels i got to replace the wheels Frank wanted to keep! The trip down was uneventful, apart from a bit of traffic, we kept it very steady to try and help with the MPG! We arrived, sorted things out, swapped some wheels and went to fetch FAF with Frank, i did't get any pictures at this point because i was a bit giddy. We stopped at the first services to get some photos and top the tank up. We kept things nice and steady on the way back...never driven an Imp before and didn't want to push it! Next stop was for a bit of lunch at Birmingham, and just make sure everything was where it should be! And then home. An absolutely amazing trip, made good time both ways, no worries, no problems...couldn't have asked for more really. I've used BAM every day since then, cured a few little rattles and problems, and a small fuel leak. I'm still actually running on the fuel i put in when i collected him! Plans for him...not much really. Stabilize any rust, fix the horn, fix the washers, fit proper front springs and Monte's on the back, and keep driving. Sorry for the massive post...

Hello Mate - Good one - just did almost exactly the same as you - all for the love of a J reg Honda CRX! Is it only me or did you also spend nights imaging how the car would be, what you'll do to it, and how it'll look when its finally done - even though you didnt actually own it - or seen it in the flesh! I had a similar edgy but enjoyable trip back down the M Way.....great when it goes right but disaster when it goes wrong - (I had the disaster version about twenty five years ago fetching a 998 rally prep'd Imp from Essex one rainy night.......Christ what a curse word night!) Anyway - Imps are ace! I have had five and they were all great. Good Luck and keep up the posts. Any plans on modding it or is it the 'original' route for BAM? P.s Did you see the two recent Retro Cars mags featuirng Imps? Worth a look!

I'm definitely enjoying it, it's one of the most fun little cars I've ever owned! There is a worrying rattle at the moment though, i thought it may be the engine cover rattling or a couple of loose bolts i found but its not. I'm hoping the Cam needs shimming, if it is where can i get the shims from? If it's not this any ideas what else it could be? The noise does change with engine speed, but can't be heard at tickover.

Haha you might be right there. The Jag was whisper quiet, very quick, refined...but VERY boring. Much more fun in the Imp, already!

Is that the same theory as "when it stops leaking oil you've run out?" You've gotta love old cars!

On a Mk1 such as this one, there is a known wiring issue concerning the horn - you really need to fit a fused relay, as without it the wiring can very easily short to ground, taking with it the rest of the loom... There's a wiring guide on the Club forum and its dead easy - but its really important to do on a Mk1 and I know Frank didn't do the mod.

I'm from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Google says around 156 miles each way to get to the Welsh Weekend, so not too bad really.
Really appreciate your offer of help, some random guy just walked into where i work and said "this manual is for whoever owns that Imp" and gave me a brand new old style Haynes manual!
No doubt i'll have some questions sooner or later though!

Oh and the rattle... if its the same one BAM had when Frank came over to me recently, it was a loose baffle in the silencer. :-)

It did sound a lot like exhaust rattle, i'll have a look later on. A slightly better exhaust system is one thing on my list of things to do, so hopefully that'll be done soon!

Cheers, right back at ya, yours will look AWESOME! I really like the idea of a fibreglass bonnet and boot, where did you get them from? Is the fit as good as it looks, and where do you mount the rear number plate? Also, the rustiest bit on my car is the doors, mind if ask where you got them from?? Cheers, Phil

Nice one Phil. I'm kinda missing the car to be honest... it drives so much better than FAF haha! Glad it's gone to a good home, looks awesome on the slotmags as well an very easily short to ground, taking with it the rest of the loom... There's a wiring guide on the Club forum and its dead easy - but its really important to do on a Mk1 and I know Frank didn't do the mod. That's 'cos you never bloomin' told me about it haha!

Phil, there are quite a few companies making fibreglass bonnets and boots and even doors, some good some...ahem...not so good, fibreglass doors on a road car are not good,I used to co-drive in a rear wheel drive mk3 escort with fibreglass doors and at speeds over 60mph they would flex at the top allowing water/dust etc into the cockpit and all over my notes!!! I may have 1 or 2 mk1 doors in my lock up,will check when I get a bit of time.
