Just picked this baby up: All for the grand price of nothing. Long drive to get it, but well worth it. Shall have it in ASAP! I'm also very soon purchasing matching doorcards for my front seats. Meaning all I really need trim wise is back seats and carpet now! Thats all for now

Haha its going to look like the flight deck of the space shuttle once all of those holes are filled with gauges.

Been getting the 'very 70s' comment a lot, which I'm glad of! cos thats exactly what I'm going for I'm gunna scour brooklands mini show on sunday for some gauges and switches and the like and i should be good to go.. I'm soon to fit a starter button as well, so it'll definitely look like a flight deck, which I'm all for!

Hello! I did indeed scour brooklands mini show for gauges, but it turned nothing up at all, autojumble was rubbish. If anyone reading this has a fuel consumption gauge, PM me! Anyway, heres a photo someone took of the mini at brooklands: Oh, and ive cleaned up that dashboard. Gave it a good wash and a stupendous coating of bumper black and its getting there now. Need some aluminium, filler and wood veneer to sort the shonky holes before I can start getting it into the car, might be a while yet! Thats all for now, hopefully i'll get the dash in soon enough

Did a quick test fit: Ordered aluminium and some walnut veneer last night, so we're getting closer to proper fitment

Veneer hath arrived! Not at all bad for about £5.50 posted. Just waiting on the aluminium, and picking up some filler tomorrow, and we should be close to going in then. I might put some joke 'star-trekky' space age warning lights in as a bit of fun as suggested by a friend, with labels such as tanks venting and reactor meltdown, anyone got any other ideas along those lines?

Its amazing how many people have suggested stuff like that, got one from a friend saying he thinks i should just have one that says "breaking down" People have so much faith

Did some more work! Aluminium arrived, so I got to work: Looks a bit rough but it'll all be covered. The original holes were wonky and unsymmetrical, and as was probably obvious, it had been chopped about. So I got the aluminium, pop riveted it to the back and filled over the top. Meaning I can drill new symmetrical holes, fit proper mk1 switches and all the rest. It'll be nice to ditch the 80s faded rocker switches. Once all the holes are sorted I'm veneering the switch panel and gauge pod and then all I have to do is sort all the wiring and connections and it can go in!

Cheers Jacko! Just came in for a tea break so i thought i'd update: Made myself some templates last night, as it would be stupid to fill the wonky holes and replace with some other wonky holes! After much drilling we are at this stage: I have a two holes to drill for some lamps, one for the pull hazard switch and the 100mm rev counter hole to cut before i can finally veneer it! May be more photos later, i don't know, we'll see.

Looking like its coming together nicely. I'm feeling the love for Mini's at the moment and yours isn't helping maybe one day!

Maybe have an old Land Rover brake light (the ones that are like the mini indicators) Wired up to an indicator relay with a warning label
"Unilateral Phase Detractor Error"

You're like a crazy backyard genius!

Good to see how it looks in the car. That warning light arrangement is intriguingly bizarre. Love it. I must admit I still can't really get my head around the idea of wood (especially real wood veneer) in a Mini interior [but I thought that about my Accord too until I wood-grain painted an early Civic wheel & couldn't resist fitting it], though you've already got various other trimmings to match.
The dash does make the early steering wheel look a little out of place, but the mini steering column doesn't look accommodating for a proper 70's spec. deep-dish aftermarket example. But I'm sure something must have been desperately common.

I'm glad you like it! nice to see someone takes something from it anyway Maybe have an old Land Rover brake light (the ones that are like the mini indicators) Wired up to an indicator relay with a warning label "Unilateral Phase Detractor Error" Love the idea of that, sounds proper technical as well so any passengers would panic and go "what the hell is wrong!" Might have to happen ;D Loving your work! Simple but thoughtful and against the grain of the usual Mini 'formula'. Glad you like it! and yes, that what i aspire to, ive seen too much of the same over the years in the mini scene and it bores me a bit! Good to see how it looks in the car. That warning light arrangement is intriguingly bizarre. Love it. The dash does make the early steering wheel look a little out of place, but the mini steering column doesn't look accommodating for a proper 70's spec. deep-dish aftermarket example. But I'm sure something must have been desperately common. I did look at making it a bit more 70s with some fake wood, but it was all horrid looking vinyl stuff that was almost gloss, and the veneer was cheap enough so i thought why not! real wood in a mini is not as uncommon as it seems, I'm hoping it'll look good anyway And yeah the early wheel and column don't match well, the column is a mk4 one, used throught the 80s into the early 90s, probably the ugliest version tbh, i did try and buy a mk3 version, which is far more 70s, but it went for loads of money so ive not got one yet. As for the wheel, does look a bit out of place, i do actually have a dished one but it didnt seem to work properly with my column, and i havent got a center cap for it anyway so it looked a bit odd. I would like to get one on though (so if anyone has one, do by all means contact me). Cheers for all the comments though everyone, i greatly appreciate them!

Updates! Todays hailstorms stopped me from doing a lot, I wanted to get electronic ignition installed and all the rest, but it was freezing thanks to said hail so I just did some small jobs. Got the final hole and veneer cut: I also sorted a backing for my steering wheel cos the bus wheel doesnt suit the new dashboard really. Hole sawed two pieces of MDF, found some screws and it was all sorted!: And here we have it, should be in soon, just gotta check it fits and then paint it. Oh, and some images of the marble sized hail we had earlier: Sent the alpacas mental, thought they were gunna jump the fence! The driveway afterwards, I don't envy anyone who was out driving... Thats all for today, I'm going to try and get the veneer glued and respective holes cut tomorrow, i'll also test the wheel while I'm at it!

The perfect steering wheel ! Hope it ends up is a good position. I've some similar ones ( but round holes in spokes) I can't wait to use.. Still hard to resist buying more when seen cheaply at swap-meets.. ... still have to sort horn buttons and actually applied "carbon-effect" film to the spokes for a different look in my '88 integra! and have leather bound another for a Honda Z ... One day...
Hope/assume the hail wasn't damagingly large, some of my toys suffered badly from a storm at Christmas. Damage still obvious on most of the trees as well.

One day... Hope/assume the hail wasn't damagingly large, some of my toys suffered badly from a storm at Christmas. Damage still obvious on most of the trees as well. Glad you like it! I'd prefer round holes in the spokes but this wheel was free so no complaints. And no, the hail wasnt damagingly large, i did wonder if it'd give my paintwork the hammerite 'hammer effect' but it was fairly pathetic hail in a sense, i.e. it was large but on impact it probably crumbled, wasnt too solid. Also, got some bits and bobs done. Got my electronic ignition installed, much quicker than i expected actually, though its still running like a wet fart because the exhaust is blowing so I'm in desperate need of an RC40 system cos i can never get the bloody clamp to seal at the manifold! Once i'd done that, i gave the steering wheel some attention: Still sat miles from the column, which is why i didnt fit it last time i tried, much annoyance led me to fiddle the the column and found i could adjust it up and down a tad. As fitted: Fettling happened: This was as high as it would go so i modified my backing piece. Made it thicker and filled it ready for paint, then test fitted it: Also got a rev counter through, going to cram the internals of the modern one into the smiths one so it works with the new ignition: Set about paint!: Primed: I'll probably give it another coat after work tomorrow then fit it on sunday! Thats all for now, ive got a new interior to pick up so keep your eyes peeled for that one
