Finally the time has come to start looking for a first retro project for my girlfriend! She's always been slightly interested in the old tat that I work on/bring home over the years, and without any further encouragement from me recently I have been given the order to seek out her first retro. Woot! First of all I was instructed to look for a Mini. Thats great, I like mini's, but the only reason she wants one is that they are small and "cute".Sooooo, I decided I need to offer some retro alternatives. And thats where you guys come in- What other cars fit the bill? Its got to be reletively cheap (it will be a resto project anyway) small, and a small engine, and obviously retro. Heres the Mini of course: This was my suggestion, Fiat 500: Cant imagine these are cheap though What other cars might be a contender? This is your target level of cuteness:

You've hit on a major problem there, haven't you Cute cannot equal cheap, because cute = demand. I often have this conflab with my other half, eg. what old tat SHE might like to pootle about in. The usual answers are: Mini Fiat 500 BMW Isetta VW Beetle & Camper The only thing we found that we could agree on (in a cute vs £££ ratio) was a Fiat 126 - an early one air-cooled with the chrome bumpers. One turned up that was affordable and we were all poised to get it, when the wierdo seller sold it to someone else for less than we'd offered

Figaros aren't exactly cheap tho...
Girlies always said my Vauxhall Viva HA saloon was cute. Never saw it myself.
How about an Austin A35? Cheap and cute

It does seem to be a common criteria that the other half will give you, and near impossible to fulfill! I too thought about a Fiat 126 as a compromise..... it also crossed my mind that I could graft on some silly 'face' from other cars at the scrapyard but quickly dismissed that as the most stupid thing i've suggested to myself evAr! Austin A35 is definately one to think about, little bit "Heartbeat" but could be good with the right mods!

Sciroccos always looked good to me...
Not too big, not too flash. A nice smoker. Defo one for the ballast if we ever manage to wean her off the modern stuff.
