I really kick myself about some of the stuff that I've given away or let slip through the net now that they are in the ascendancy.
I gave away 2 mini's, one that was pretty OK and one that had been 'molested' by berlinetta / commer chameleon. Both would have been worth a few bob now. Then there was the Skoda Estelles that were also binned for no reason other than they had zero market value at the time. Toyota Carina? last of the rear-drive ones and dead easy to put a 4AGE into? Kept for posterity? Nope, sold to the african exporters for £50.
And you wouldn't believe the pain I feel for turning down a mint early T25 bus for £100, purely because I didn't view it as a 'proper' VW bus. ARGH!
As for future investments, if it's sporty or 'iconic' of an era then that is a good way to go. 205GTi's & XR stuff can still be found floating in the classifieds for £500, so you can't lose really. Not sure about 'run of the mill' fodder eg. montego's etc - lets face it Farina Oxbridges and Marina's etc. don't exactly go for millions now, do they?

The one I also want to get hold of when I get a lot more space is a 1980(ish) vw transporter.

It helps if the car was never sold in huge numbers. It will take a long time to get through the huge stock of Sierras out there.
Some that have just "jumped"
Talbot Alpine Citroen Visa Renault 5 Mk 2 (Mk 1 is obviously a classic already)
Ones to hoard
Fiat Cinqecento VW Lupo Peugeot 605 Citroen XM (buy one now for no money and have the next CX on your hands - serioulsy you try buying a CX now! A good one that is!

It helps if the car was never sold in huge numbers. It will take a long time to get through the huge stock of Sierras out there. But that's why I didn't worry about trying to get a mk3 Cortina when I started driving - there were quite a few about and they were horrendous for me to insure, not to worry I thought, I'll get one in two or three years. I've not been able to afford a nice one since! I think we've got most bases covered in this thread, but I'd like to see some Renault 21s and 25s saved, and a Fiat Croma...

Mk3 Tina's are a funny one, I guess its the obvious 70's lines, my mate got his bizzare custom quite cheap, forked out storage for years, with appreciation over 8 years, he's probs not lost too much £! Mk5's are still worth not much.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

the more that exist, the cheaper they are, and the faster they go from 'fix it' to 'scrap it'....
look at mondeos. you can pick up (as demonstrated in another thread) a runner for 150 notes.... so people will scrap them as soon as they need four tyres and an exhaust. there's hundreds in the scrappers up here. within a couple of years the mk1 will be a rare beast indeed, the same as mk4 escorts are starting to get a bit scarce.

It helps if the car was never sold in huge numbers. It will take a long time to get through the huge stock of Sierras out there. Just like it took ...ooh, about 5 minutes for all the zillions of Cortinas to go. Now you see 'em, now you don't...
