Following on from an earlier very informative thread, it seems that a removable steering wheel is a good deterrant. I have seen these fitted on the more exotic Skylines and Supra's but not on retro machinery.
Can someone explain whats involved in fitting one? How do they work? Can you retain the factory steering wheel ? Are they remobale ( eg if you sell the car and don't want to part with the kit , can you reinstall the factory wheel?)
Lastly, any recomendations of suppliers, apart from Ebay?
Cheers

on my moutney wheel i can just pop the horn out and undo one bolt and the whole thing comes off. could still be stolen if someone had the right nissan wheel but since even i don't know what that is i cant imagine some criminal lacky would either!

I have one on one of my 205s, as it has buckets and soon to be caged (hopefully) so makes it a little effort to get your legs in, but yes, is also another security aid i suppose! It's just a seperate block that bolts between boss and wheel, mine has 2 pull tab things and another lock with key, so can be locked on.

I'm interested in these but have two points of curiousity - 1. How fast can you get them on/off? 2. What is there to stop them coming off when you're driving around? (yeah I'm paranoid )

Takes about 2 secs if not locked, otherwise as long as it takes to put your key in, unlock it an voila! There is other evsions that don't have locks, have different mechanisms, there's a 'Rage' (chav make) one my friend has, and is a better mechanism, but mine's the original 'snap-off' type, that had the lock & key. The wheel itself locates so in the correct position, onto 3 pins, then the two pull out pins lock into the centre of the hub, holding it on so not come of from your pull.
I am also paranoid and worry that it might come off easily one day when not locked, but surely they wouldn't make them if there was that much danger in them??

even if it does come off, you'll still be holding it in your hands, so it will take no time at all to just pop it back on again!!!1

check with your insurance first, some companies flat out refuse to insure a car with a snap off steering wheel

Yeah I can't say I've ever heard of one coming off in someone's hands, but above insurance worries make suggestions.
Even though it'd be in their interest because it would make it less likely to be stolen!

Ive got to get one when the funds allow, but i shall be going for a splined unit, that welds to the column. This has lots of similar splines and one double one, so it has a way on! Its held on with a ball bearing that fits in a slot. Its the life line type that is available at demon theives.
We need racer86, hes put one on the 'rolla

squeezed myself into a toniq R kit thingy that had a clip on wheel (it needed it!), over at mantaA16v's place. it was a mountney shirt button on an adaptor to fit what appeared to be a three bolt grant/kart fitment. the boss was master splined (sensibly) but had about 90 splines and took the owner about 5 minutes to fit it. took 0.5 seconds to remove it, so a worthwhile anti theft system. I think you pulled a tab on the rear of the boss, possibly arkward if you have large column shrouds. heres a pic; it was on a six sided ford (fiasco mk3?) column. fancying one for the '02 now. and some cargo pants with extra large pockets for the steering wheel
