The Escort's finally on the street now, so I've started to think about security for it, since the locks are absolutely pathetic! I've got a Cat 2 immobiliser on there which is twin circuit, but the car only really HAS one circuit to immobilise, and it's a piece of cake to wire 'round it. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, sorry...but I don't want to publicise the precise details!) I was wondering if any R-R'ers have got any recommendations on securing old motors? TBH fitting the immobiliser may put some kids off, but it's not that much use....I've also got a Stoplock on there (bar that goes through the steering wheel... ), but the real security is provided by Mrs JS's Vectra being parked 1" from the Escort's front bumper! Any advice gratefully received! On a more positive note, I'm loving driving the old beastie, and in fact it's a better car 'round the town than my Fiesta is - lighter steering, better gearchange, smooth clutch, good driving position. Top stuff!

Good stuff, and good timing with this thread, i started one a while back, money is better spent on mods for the sake of fun. but as highlighted we must not under look the security of our motors, they are the weakest link on the roads!
Good news on getting road worthy, much prefer the 'scort to a festa, what a beauty!
Edit, Sierra locks? I starte a thread on FSOC a while back, will send it if you cant find it, not sure how much use it is to the escort. Big fat approved steering lock any good?

is it worth installing deadlocks at the bottom of the door through the floor like van drivers do but more subtle?

Kill switches ?
Also I looked at full on Toad immobilsers etc. a little while ago,.. was suprised how cheap they were (in relative terms).
Ideally a full tracker and immobiliser would be the way forwards... with added seat spikes that get activated when it gets stolen..

take the rotor arm out i guess a wheel clamp would be a pretty good deterant too.although if someone is determined enough they find a way round most things.

I read a decent tip on the PC forum; hide a cheap-ass PAYT mobile phone in your car somewhere (put it on silent!!) if it gets robbed the signal can be traced, if you’re reasonably quick about it. Whether the coppers would go to the bother of trying to trace it of course is another matter.

nearly forgot the obvious take the king lead with you I assume you mean the coil HT lead? The trouble with doing this is that if the person knows what they're doing then they could just put on of the other plug leads in its place and drive it away firing on three.... I always used to take the rotor arm out of the oxford when I was at uni. You'd have to know what was missing AND have one to drive it away. JonnyS, I suspect that what you have done already would deter the casual joyride type theif. As for a pro, nothing you do would prevent them taking it if they wanted it. You'd need a tracker of some sort to possibly see it again.

I'm going to concrete an eye into my drive and chain the Cressy down via the towing hook, I don't think an immobiliser will stop someone picking it up and loading it on a flatbed.

its practically imposible for them to steal the car off the drive, unless thy fancy breaking into the house, moving the mondeo out the way and taking my car off the gravel drive without the dogs or me hearing as can be seen from this pic, but i do have to park in some sketch areas so an alarm and immob is the best itll get

I'd do that if I had a driveway! I'll have a look at kill switches etc over the next few days, I might substitute the fuel pump for an electric one - something else that can be disabled by the immobiliser, then save up for a nice big alarm. And I've got an old PAYG phone, I think there are some web-based tracking services - might be worth a look? Thanks for the advice, guys! I feel I should also point out that I took that picture of the Escort with the wife's camera, which has a "Beer Goggles" setting. It may look like the Paris Hilton of mk1 Escorts in the pics, but it's actually a bit closer to the Jade Goody league. Still, helped with the agreed valuation insurance! ;D

The bar-type things that go through the steering wheel aren't that good from what I can gather. I spent £100 or whatever it was on one of those Disklok ones - the full circular thing that covers the whole wheel. It's a bit of a pain to use sometimes but it's visible, and all the reviews at the time reckoned it was the best steering-wheel lock type thing you could get.
obviously, that'll only deter casual thieves, not pros.
My Dad had a valve in the brake line on his old E28 5-Series - press the brake pedal, put a key into a switch and turn, and then the brakes stay locked on until released. It was a professional kit I think, can't remember the name of it now and I haven't heard or seen anything similar since... Not sure if you can still get them.

Rmad, that is a good idea. Gotta be honest though, if you come on here one day and tell us your driveway has been robbed with your car still parked on it i'll struggle not to laugh a little bit!!!
