It wasn't great was it.
I enjoyed the caravan bit as a bit of comedy but it's all turning into a staged sitcom- how can we take the proper car related stuff seriously if that kind of thing is so obviously staged. For example, the Vectra piece- sure it's obviously not a great handler but the Stig can't quell understeer by unsettling the car using the gears or the handbrake?? Please! Of course he could have posted a better lap time but it just seemed Clarkson had decided it was ass and the Stig had to prove it.

As a piece of entertainment I loved it, May's spliff comment when talking about driving buses was legendary. Heard through somebody who filmed with Clarkson he liked a bit of a smoke at one time too... As a car programme it was a bit lame though, Hammond kind of summing it up with his little feature run-down. The whole staged story thing is getting a little tired too. The last series wasn't so bad and they covered themselves well, Bugatti Veyron for example, but come on guys you can do better, we've seen it. It's always the same though, they raise the game then have to maintain it, and it's been a few years now... It's only because they've done so well in the past that we now get irate, imagine if this new format hadn't come along at all... "With a faint waft of oversteer, there's no time to admire the scenery at this pace..." Plus anything that keeps Vicky Butler Henderson of my screen makes me happy.

Problem is there isn't anything else car (review) related that is any good. I caught Pulling Power earlier and despite the two Mikes apparent knowledge of car issues it's very iffy and pretty dull viewing. I love cars but if I can't be assed to watch it then who the hell out of the non-car savvy commnunity is going to bother giving it a chance?!?
Fifth Gear is the possible exception but it seems they want to go down the TG route of amusing segments which just come off as a bit of a pale imitiation. They had actually manage to pull the show from being much maligned to actually the only sensible fact-based show on TV so it would be a shame if they didn't stick their formula and instead dilute it.

don't get me wrong its good to have it there, but he's crushed enough caravans and blown up enough Yugos already in his vids Just seems Clarkson Video or Clarkson show territory to me.
Caravans are great just a few nuggs use them thats all. Would of preferd to see them drive a bus TBH, that would of been interesting.

All true... Trouble is Fifth will always chase Top Gear, because of the viewing figures it attracts and that's all the suits look at, which in turn gives TG the money to do what they do. I don't like Pulling Power, it's all that's wrong about car telly, and Fifth Gear is trying to be something it isn't. Tiff Needle and a computer? Get him jumping a Porsche... In this case, I know we could do better. But after Mike Burch, now the producer of Pulling Power called me a cowboy once I guess my chances are shot... But from him I take it as a compliment. Anybody for Vroom Vroom?

Also, I'd venture my opinion that the Star In a Reasonably Priced Car bit is a waste of time- literally it takes a big part of the show up and also it upsets the pacing of it. There are so many decent articles in the Top Gear magazine which they could take their lead from as well so they're not short of material.
It went from a serious car show to a more lively and accessible format that even my girlfriend would enjoy which was cool as it covered both areas but even she was despairing at the so obviously staged features which although amusing are a bit much. The three chaps might as well move into a flat next session and get VBH to play the upstairs neighbour they all lust after: Clarkson (and friends) Behaving Badly!

Haha... True again. I don't read TG regularly, but it always entertains and has some good looking stuff which wouldn't cost half as much to produce, fire brigade call out? That'll be £2000 then...
The Star in a Reason.. etc. At first they had people who were actually car orientated, now it just seems to be whoever is available.
I think it's almost time for another programme to slot in somewhere, and catch them all off guard. Damn those blinkered commissioning editors.

Agree, while Top Gear is still an amusing piece of entertainment it is getting a bit stale and the feature bits they do are looking increasingly staged. Like the 'van fire I could see it was a gas fire, propane to be precise, all very amusing but it looks so staged and I lose my interest at that point.
I actually like 5th Gear but again it could do with losing the staged features, especially because it usually looks like a catch-up game with TG.

Last nights episode seems to have left a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths, I guess it didn't help that we've been without TG for 5 weeks or so.
Personally I thought it was great, clearly staged but very funny all the same.
Guess it depends on what you watch it for.

i watch topgear as a comedy/motoring program, last night was that, would have been nice to have a bit more motoring in and the staged things don't do it for me but it was still worth a chuckle.
