The show made me laugh several times, but I'd missed the start so had to sit through all the caravan business and star in a reasonably priced car, thinking "OK, there'll be some proper car stuff in a mo......" ....and there wasn't. As for the F1 car indoors, what were they thinking? How shiny was that floor? It was never going to get any traction! It's all about ratings though and I KNOW I'm in a minority...

It was Boring with a capital B.
Carvan = only entertaining when he smashed it into a pole. Rest of it unexciting, overstaged and plainly just not of any good at all.
F1 car inside = He was right, they should have binned it.
Star in a moderatly priced car = Jeez, could they find anyone less interesting? Or anything LESS interesting to do. It's no fun seeing a Eurobox being trundled around a track at 30mph.
3 Car shootout = Actually quite good. Very, very bad editing for the 'race' though which made it completely illegible as to what was actually going on.
I found it pretty dire. I wee better programming!

Missed the first 30 mins, but that caravan thing was pretty poor. All staged and just went on waaay too long. It didn't help that I seem to have missed the first bit which must have contained more relevant material. Halfway through watching whoever it was drive around the track bouncing off the rev limiter at 30mph I went and got a drink. TG is sometimes good, but it's curse word filler stuff like the caravan malarkey that puts me off it. It was funny but just went on and on.

I was p1ssed off by the comment about the pub next to the campsite... I used to live across the road from that pub (The Frampton Arms, Moreton, Dorset) and its superb - ace ales, nice food and its a quiet country pub.
The staging of it was a bit obvious - the jokes wore thin very quickly and the whole super-lad behaviour thing looks toss when you're 45 like Clarkson. He once was a biting, funny and clever journalist - pity he's starting to believe his own press.

I still believe that episode was silly IMO, could of been undertaken better. For the record IMO caravaning is ok, but not for me like! They intended to wind up the caravaners and may even read out one of their complaints As i said TG can be awesome at times but if this is the future just bring back Clarkson show...

hmmm i forgot it was back on TV, i found it last night on ntl ondemand - wasn't one of their best episodes but as with a lot of the more recent shows, it's only partly car programme and partly entertainment. it's probably the reason it has x thousand viewers more than anyone else..... f'rexample my good lady wife watches it with me, but if it was Tiff Needel explaining how common-rail diesels work, or racing a AMG Merc round a track, she'd be flicking over to The Royal or Heartbeat or whatever pansy-ass period drama is on the other channel.

Fair comment, the entertainment side has been good 75% of the time, and i've been amazed by a lot of the production and ideas, in the past.

I own a Caravan, i recently purchased it on E bay. Went in it for the first time the other weekend. Towing went well, didn't hit anything, reversed the van perfectly into the space, because i'm just so good at anything like that! Comes from owning and driving a Stretch limo in London for a few years. Anyway the point is that i found it highly entertaining and so did the wife, it was a bit staged but who cares. If Top Gear was too technical our partners wouldn't let us watch it. So it does well to appeal to them. Stop taking things so seriously. IMO it was entertaining laugh out aloud TV, and there isn't much of that on these days. Come on it's not exactly the first time they have done something like this. Just look at the Car Boat thing they did before the World Cup. That was a bit staged as well. But very funny. Sunday evenings are a pretty depressing time and TG makes it something to look forward to.

For some reason i really enjoyed the boat bit! I think the caravan thing went on too long and setting fire to a site and towing dodgy made them look like fools. With fond memories of a childhood of caravaning and tenting i did find some bits humorous, cos it can be a chore-caravaning, being in charge of emptying the sink waste and filling up the aquaroll on demand etc was a pain, and seeing my dad turn blue (and the air blue) reversing into our yard was stressful, reversing where he put it was near impossible no exaduration! LOL . It was a bit too much though along with the near pointless indoor F1 car etc and bafoonary!

It is vaguely amusing watching. As been said before it has mass appeal - I know a lot of people who don't even like cars who watch it. I recall the days of tony mason 12 minute test drive of a fire engine, or Chris Goffeys frankly tedious rant on how he loves Morgans.
JC views however are frankly dangerous to those who don't understand that he is only taking the pee. His writing isn't too bad, but the average BBC viewer will take his word as gospel. In the same way that Lawrence boyelln Johnson is supposedly an authority in interior design, some viewers will relate anything arty with him. Not a good thing in my book.
Top Gear does have a lot of staging and no doubt is carefully scripted but it is by far a lot better than the rest.

Top Gear has been sliding for several eps now, but having towed a caravan several times (and lots of other things) I p*ss*d myself at their antic - it really shows what a bunch of muppets they are, especially whanging the steel post........I would like to know if the Kia was a write-off after that as it appeared to have wrenched the towbar clean out of the chassis and that would be very, very expensive.... I went and did a Driven a few years ago at Bentwaters and although the show was a bit iffy, it was an absolute blast taking the p*ss out of an Audi A4, ignoring a new MINI in preference to a 'B' reg shed and ragging the ar53 out of an Audi and a Saab 95 sport down the main runway...then hitting over 100mph in the Marina GT with the programme director in the passenger seat! Downside was being passed by a Porsche so fast it made the car shake....... Mike Brewer is a complete tw@t but a laugh, Jason Plato is great and Penny Mallory certainly knows her stuff where cars are concerned. Good day out, and at least the audience GOT INVOLVED! (Top point of the day...bunch of Evo, Scooby, Porsche and BMW drivers all poreing over the GT and claiming the standard Leyland steering wheel was 'cool'!)
