Am browsing ebay searching for inspiration and stumbled across a Sierra GT. Looks like a normal late Spec DOHC sierra to me . Whats the difference? Just a bit of badge engineering? I'm really fancying a late spec Sierra hatch. Slammed with some noice 17's

Slammed with some noice 17's I think I'm right in saying a GT is a badged-up and alloy wheel'd LX. Except with much nicer looking seat fabric instead of the snore-fest grey. Still, you'll get rear discs and (I think) PAS, and the 2.0 DOHC isn't as bad as the old wives' tales would have you believe - I've done thousands of miles in 'em with no grief. 125BHP straight out of the box, and all of mine have managed 40mpg easily on good runs. Most important thing is to MAKE SURE THE TOP HOSE DOESN'T PRESSURISE WHEN YOU START THE CAR UP and you'll be fine!

Don't think i'll be buying one for a long while yet and buy the time I come to get my next car who knows what I'll get. For some unknown reason and having no experience with them or knowing anything about them I really like the DOHC engines

Yeah, GT sounds a bit overly sporty doesnt it, seems to inspire a few tweaks amongst owners. seen a few ones scrapped/broken recently so they cant be that special, but if i was in the market, i'd be chasing a 2 litre DOHC in any guise, not that theres owt wrong with a nicely looked after CVH does what it says on the tin!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Jonny's right - I once spoke with a Ford engineer who said he didn't really know how it differed from a GLX, other than different seat fabric, wheels and badges! It was launched at the end of the Sierra's life, from my recollection....

Was probably just a way of getting shot of the last of the sierra's by making middle aged men assume that because it said GT it was sporty. Works on me and i'm 19!

I think that it's just a special edition run off to get rid of the last Sierras. The chap I use for carpentry at home still uses the one he bought new.

It was indeed just a GT badge combined with a few bits they had lying around the factory.... so says the salesman in my uncle's local dealership when he asked! Because the Mondeo was all-new and they weren't running the two side-by-side (like they did with the Escort/Focus and Fiesta/Fiesta Classic) they were just getting rid of as many bits as possible. From what the guy said there were a few different combinations of interior trim and alloy wheel too.

Spot on....back in 1992 Ford were DESPERATE to sell some Sierras, because as far as the ordinary buyer was concerned, the Sierra was way, way outclassed by the Cavalier, 405, Carina and the car the Mondeo had to out-do, the Primera (some Ford bods were given Primeras as company cars when developing the Mondeo!)
I remember my Dad wanting to trade our F-reg 2.0LX for a new GT....but my Mum was having none of it!
Personally I'd buy a good GT right now, 'cos I'm bored of grey interiors and before long every decent Sierra will have been cut up and hoarded as parts by middle aged blokes under the pretense of "building a kit car".... then they'll be Ebay'd for peanuts or stuck in a skip!

what's the performance like with the DOHC motor? Didn't they do a GT estate too?

The DOHC has 125BHP and 0-60 is a reasonable 9.1 seconds

The DOHC has 125BHP and 0-60 is a reasonable 9.1 seconds 10/10 ;D I think 125BHP is with a cat, some were quoted as 130BHP. The carb'd ones are more like 110BHP (but plenty of torque). 0-60 is 0.2 seconds slower than a Cavalier SRi 8v....the Cavaliers feel quicker at lower speeds, the Sierras are much better at motorway overtaking speeds. My Ghia has just a simple Ashley exhaust and Janspeed 4-branch and it's fairly lively, without being bankrupted by fuel costs!

Got it with 82k, it went off to be a racing car shell with 162k on th clock... never caused me any grief at all. The thing with the twin cams is they handle a lot better than the heap-o-wibblepoo CVH ones and seem to rot less too. Had an 1800LX the same age for a bit and itwas a completely different car - nothing like as good. The 2.0 burned less petrol as well. The twin cams were built in Germany and have better dampers and thicker anti-roll bars. Most have got 4 wheel discs (some ABS, some not) which are similar to the 4wd cossie. Some GLSi models have an optional LSD (rare) They made an XR4x4 with the twin cam but I wouldn't bother personally... I believe about 500 GT's were made, all on a K plate... I guess the "desirable" twin cam is the Sapphire 2000E with leather and air con, 500 of them made too I think on a G/H plate.
