hello all I'm after another 5 speed gearbox to fit on the 2 litre pinto I know the type 9 will but they are getting silly money these days and I'm trying to do it on a budget so I'm going down another route not ford its got to be fit a r. w.d mk 2 cortina estate
anythink else I can us

MT75 came in the 2.0 DOHC Sierras and Mk3 Granadas, much stronger than the type-9, the shift isn't as good, but they are cheap enough and there should be plenty in the breakers.

Why not use a Mk2 Cortina estate trans, then? Why does it need a 5-spd? You can't go fast enough on public roads to ever get to 5th anyway.

I would imagine on the motorway the 4 speed box makes travelling at 70 mph a bit noisy and uneconomical? Depends what you use the car for I guess.

The rear axle can be geared down to suit but I remember Akku saying the 4 speed 'boxes from 'Tinas were not exactly made for motorway use.

It's the axle that isn't made for motorway work... most mk2 tinas have a 3.9:1 or 4.1:1 final drive which does get a bit noisy at 70mph... I use a 4 speed box and a 3.75 capri diff instead of hacking the tunnel for a bigger box.

you can easily pick up a good type 9 for about 75-80 quid. since when as that been expensive?! a bit of waiting will net you one for less, ive seen a couple go for 50 quid recently, and mine was only 30!
the only thing that will bolt up without an adapter and fit in the tunnel is type 9. a MT75 is a LOT bigger. id rather pay the money for a bolt on part and not have to hack my tunnel to pieces to get it to fit rather than save 20 quid. yeah you could use a 4 speed (But you specificially ask for a 5 anyway) and swap the diff to gear it down, but try seeing how much a 3.54 or a 3.7 diff goes for, and youll see the type 9 as the cheap option!
honestly, if you thing that kinda money is pricey for a gearbox, i cant see you getting very far with the rest of the car.

i thought it did with a bit of hammerage rather than mucho chopping? or maybe I'm getting confused between mates projects ive helped on and thinking of a mk3 if you say it wont?

there is a brace around the tunnel that fouls the box - it's mucho choppage time! Mk3 it goes straight in with a bit of crossmember/gearstick hole tweaking.

Pluss using the MT75 you need release bearing mods on a Xflow or pinto and the gear selector will need shortening, the only pluss point is the MT came with an hydrolic clutch on later scorpios so there's no converting to cable for the type 9, as already said budget route is the type 9

Like it been said befor stick to the type 9, they are a good all ropund box and if your going onto a pinto the clutch is a straight fit, if you use a different box you will have to play aroung to get a clutch to fit. The type 9s are well under £100 and if you hunt about you can get one for around £50 so i don't think they are expensive plus you get 5 gears and an easy clutch solution
